What's the left rear look like? That right rear quarter looks shockingly straight, given the hit. If the left side is as straight as the right is (seriously, those taillight gaps are wild) I think they'll opt to repair. ESPECIALLY that new.
My uneducated guess is $8k damage on a $18k car so they will probably fix.
Other factors...
How many airbags (like side bags) are blown? Bags in seats are an expensive repair.
Do the rear doors still open fine? Any bends in the doors.?
What does a replacement bumper cost for a mom these days?

I think the trunk structure is designed to buckle into the cargo compartment like that. Somebody with actual experience on the board (forget who) said that modern cars that take damage to the designed crumple zones usually have to have new factory panels welded in to be considered structurally sound for another collision.
I've seen a few Mazda3s and Miatas in the junkyards with less wrinkled metal than that, though they were a couple of years older. I'd be surprised if they didn't write it off.

Ha! I didn’t notice that because of the nice gap to taillight.
I haven't written one of those so don't know what part prices are like but I suspect it's repairable. Quarter buckles can probably be pulled out for the most part. Mostly depends on if it needs a trunk floor or rear rails.
i'll shoot higher. Hard to guess from the photos, but this goes way beyond body work. The entire rear suspension is probably destroyed. I don't think it's totalled, but I wouldn't be surprised if that repair tops $10k easily.
