I didn't realize anyone had those alerts turned on other than people who were planning to abduct a kid and wanted to have a source of intel to help plan their escape.

Totally have mine turned on and will leave them that way. I'm happy to be woken up if it helps someone get their kid back.

And why haven't we had anyone say "This is why I don't have one of them new-fangled cotton-pickin' cell phones, anyhow!" Usually there's a couple of them by now.Appleseed wrote: If your child was missing, wouldn't you want a million wound up people? The inconvenience of being woken up is well worth the potential finding of a kidnapped child to me. Kidnappers usually don't stick close to where they took the kid from, so of course they're going to cast a wide net. So many things to be upset about, but this isn't one of them.
Less money spent on stupid smart phones and expensive data plans equals more money to spend on stupid cars and car parts
Plus, I have a really bad habit of breaking phones and would much rather replace a $15 Walmart burner than a $XXX iPhone or Android.

+1. Never found them bothersome.
started to post something, then realized nothing good could come from my commentary.
I a big fan of pecan pie
FWIW, I think the system is intended as a deterrent (if I make off with somebody’s kid, I’ll have every soccer mom in a 100 mile radius hell bent on finding me) as much as it is a recovery mechanism.
Personally, I prefer the old rusty jumper cables to the scrotum method of deterrence but that seems to be frowned upon in this enlightened age so now we’ve got an app.
I guess people don't steal kids very often around here. I can't remember the last time I received one.
The local news and weather stations, on the other hand. They will send out an alert every time someone stubbs their little toe. I have all those alerts turned off and/or deleted their apps.
I received 3 notifications for the hurricane from Accuweather. A warning, a watch, and a flood. That's proper use of a emergency notification.

I like your approach, but I think it would be better to apply the cables to the nips. Wouldn't want a female kidnapper to get off scot free due to a technicality. Oh, and I think the other end of the cables should be attached to a 12v battery, that's on a charger.

My point was, the wide distribution is not a fault of the system, but the whole reason it exists.
I was enjoying a relaxing drive once when an Amber alert went off, scared the crap out of me.
Plus.....it was for a guy that abducted a child 900 miles away.....15 min ago.......
Now I'm not great at math but I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have seen him unless he has warp drive

Yeah, that's why I went back and did some editing. Looked at what I wrote, and I didn't like how I sounded. Too much of nastiness on the board today.
I never knew you could turn the alerts off. I got a tornado warning earlier this year...... about 30 seconds after it removed my front yard.

...this time! Stay vigilant, my man.
What irks me about these alarms is that the same urgency is employed for the father who got a bum deal on his custody rights, and ran off with his daughter out of turn, as for the the girl who got snatched up by the child rapist in the candy van.
