I inspected this Miata for a guy looking to do a fly-n-buy on a shinsen edition miata. the car was pretty clean with typical wear for its age and some tasteful mods. I figured he was planning on buying it after the inspection but didn't know for sure till i saw the link to the story in the jewel or jalopy email i received tonight.

I wonder if it was so cheap BECAUSE it was a Shinsen... those things are very polarizing.

Also: I really hope he removes that grill mesh crap. So ugly.

They posted on here back around the first of the year, so i signed up. I think Kurt might be the only person that has used them in my region so far. he definitely was last time I checked, and I'm supposed to get an email when anyone posts looking for an inspector in my region.

Very cool!

I'd consider signing up an an inspector if I wasn't 2-hours away from the nearest metro area they list.

This is great. I like how you even sent him pictures.

When I flew to pick up my M3, 1000 miles away, i did not even know what I was going to find. The pictures where not that good and the seller (a very nice guy) did not know anything about cars. The only good thing was the price until I saw it. I wish I would have known about this service.

In reply to Slippery:

Yeah I took a lot of pictures, of things he asked to see like the condition of the top, and also of all of the things I found while going over the car. Po had installed an oil filter relocating kit I found two oem filters and the barely used oem shinsen floormats in the trunk. The car seemed to have been taken care of pretty well.

Glad you like the article Strizzo, and thanks for helping Kurt with the inspection, I know he was really pleased at how thorough you were.

@petegossett - if you are interested in signing up I would recommend just picking the regions closest to you. The metro regions were are way of grouping inspection requests in a given area. We kept the number of regions smaller at the beginning to make sure there is an inspector in each region. As we grow we'll add new regions and split the bigger ones up. You can also sign up to receive alerts from multiple regions if you're willing to travel.

@Strizzo - buyers can contact inspectors directly as well as posting requests, so you might not see every request in your area. We're seeing more buyers as we ramp up our marketing efforts and get the word out, and posts like this definitely help. Thanks!

We hope you guys find the service useful, we can always use more inspectors and hope you remember us next time you're buying a car!

How much does one get paid to inspect a car?

sometime in the future I might need a car inspected. I am due to inherit my Grandmother's 2000something Malibu Maxx when she stops driving at the 1st of the year. I am thinking of selling it and buying a Miata

Each inspector sets his or her own rates. What I have seen many inspectors do is set a base rate, then add on for extras like driving out of their area, or charging a bit more if they have a lot of expertise with a specific car and really know what to look for. You can also set the distance you are willing to drive.

You have to decide what your time is worth. I personally start at $50, since it's going to take me at least a few hours just to drive over, inspect and photograph the car, and upload the photos.

The best part is that unlike most other services we don't take a cut of your earnings. It's free to sign up, we'd love to have you!

Cheers, Ian

@mad_machine - you can sign up for our newsletter so we stay top of mind when you're ready to buy. We have lots of inspectors with Miata experience.

The newsletter signup is right at the top of our homepage. We only send out about one email newsletter per month, so you're not suddenly going to get spammed everyday.

I'm honestly thinking of becoming an inspector, but my concern is that I would miss a flaw in a car and run into some trouble with the buyer. What sorts of legal "protections" are there for the inspectors?

it is not a mechanical inspection, that is to be left to a shop. it is a cosmetic and function inspection. when i did this one, i just looked at it as closely as i would if i were buying the car myself, only difference was i took pictures of everything i found, down to the door dings, surface scratches on the paint and water stains in the top.

Strizzo said it as well as I could. The inspection is not a guarantee of condition or value, and you should make sure the buyer understands that. The inspection provides another set of data points to help the buyer make a more informed decision, and help them negotiate a better price. You have a chance to communicate with buyers directly and if they seem too high maintenance we suggest you pass on the inspection.

So far everybody has been thrilled with the inspections they have received, and we have heard from others who hired a big, generic company and wrote to us to say they wish they had used someone like Strizzo.

You can also reach me directly at ian at jewelorjalopy dot com if anyone has any specific questions.
