Yesterday I go to the bank I have an account with to get some small change for work.  The standard stuff.  Break a $100 bill into smaller amounts for the cash drawer.  Except the bank does not have a roll of quarters.   Yep, you read that right.  The bank did not have a roll of quarters.

This morning I go into the local McDonalds for a quick breakfast.  No coffee.  *sigh*

I've found that the rising use of cards to pay for everything have limited the change most places have on hand.

That said, I probably have a few hundred bucks of change in my jar that has to go back into circulation.

I tell my kids "Use cash.  You'll miss it when it's gone."

Pretty sure they don't care.

I was shocked to learn that many banks don't keep a lot of cash on hand. When I was getting ready to buy my car I went to withdraw $5000 out of a branch at a supermarket. I had to make an appointment to come back the next day as that would have cleaned them out. That's 50 people coming in for $100 throughout the day, WTF, you are a BANK!

My bank told me the same thing.  I told them the balance on the account was going to stay below a thousand and moved the rest to another bank that won't pull this crap.  A few days later I went to another branch and got the cash, they asked what the money was for.  I wanted to say drugs but just said none of your business.  TD bank, they got caught money laundering and have been in deep poo poo for other stuff.

Try calling some local independent banks, My new bank has much better service and products.

On my way to dinner I see her and joke, hey, the cookie package shrunk.........she tells me she didn't notice.....

There is a hole in my basement that leads to an alternate dimension where everything is almost the same, except there is no number 7. Weird.

I wrote a fantasy story in a guest book about that once.

My SIL is a newly minted bank manager and last week had an elderly customer come in the withdraw a large sum.  It seemed suspicious so she called the other branches around town and found out that the customer had withdrawn over $45K that day.  Go ahold of the daughter and police to do a wellness check and caught said elderly lady putting the money into a shoebox and planning to hand it over to an internet person.

Money is back in her account with more robust flags on it to help prevent future scamming from succeeding.

I suppose that might have been it, but they flat out said it would leave them with too little on hand. Now I'm bummed I am perceived as an old coot :( They even asked what I was using it for and I told them I was buying a car. Never thought about the scam side of it, that's a good way to delay the scumbags if it is a scam.

I tried to get cash out of the bank when I went to buy my first Miata in 1992. IIRC they told me I needed to give them advance notice for more than a couple of grand - and Miatas were not $1500 in 1992! So not a lot of cash on hand is not that new.

That's been a long time thing, especially in smaller auxiliary branches like in malls, grocery stores, Walmarts, even downtown storefronts where there are massive amounts of people and rarely any security. For security reasons mostly.

I was only half joking when they told me I needed $3100 in 18 hours to pay for my PET scan and I said I'd have to rob 2 or 3 banks to get that kind of money that quickly. The vast majority of money only exists as 1s and 0s on a computer

Same experience here, except I went to a stand alone branch. They told me either wait until the next day or they would call the next two nearest branches and have them "hold" cash for me. They could tell how much each branch had & how much they could have "held" for me. But they would only "hold" it for me for an hour. I had to take an extra long lunch so I could go to 3 locations in total to get $5k in cash that day.

Lack of cash must be a regional thing.

According to a bank employee, my local Wells Fargo loads both of their ATM machines on Friday afternoon with $75k. They frequently have to reload them on Mondays.

I've never had a problem pulling as much cash as I need. I pulled $5k a couple of months ago to buy a 4-wheeler. They asked what it was for and I told them I wanted to buy something.

The feds and the banks would love to push everyone to electronic forms of payment. The feds, so they can track and tax the money. And the banks, so they can skim 1-5% off the top.

I use cash locally.

Sometimes a bank near a mall has more cash but it can be in smaller bills.  A bank near the local mall does lots of business with small stores in the mall making deposits.  So you can get a bigger check cashed but be prepared for small bills.  That was a few years ago, not sure if anyone uses cash now.

I think there's a difference between what's loaded in the ATM and what's available at the counter. It's not like the teller can go crack open the ATM and pull out a few thousand.

I can tell you that retailers prefer electronic forms of payment as well. Cash is a pain to deal with. I also prefer to pay electronically in my day to day affairs, but I'm rarely dealing under the table.

The only time I have cash on me is when we go downtown for a show and need to tip the valet.

I have a CC with a $45k line, why do I need cash?

Back to the weird E36 M3, this actually happened this morning.

The neighbors across the street have turkeys. Usually they roam free, but they've been in the coop lately with the chickens. This morning about a dozen wild turkeys came down the hill and were harassing the turkey in the coop. Like somebody outside the prison yard laughing at someone inside. It went on for a good 5 minutes before we went out to get the bus, the didn't like the garage door opening.

Turkeys are surprisingly territorial. They really don't like owls. Camping when a flock of turkeys gets pissy with an owl late at night will wake the dead.

Yeah, access to the ATM is very limited for obvious reasons.  These days the only reason someone would stand in line to get cash rather than use the ATM is if they need more than the ATM system will give them in a day, and that's unusual.  Banks aren't going to keep tens of thousands of dollars sitting around just in case that happens, it's a unnecessary security risk as well as a loss of income due to cash not earning interest.

As far as the original topic, there was the time we went to Black Angus and they were out of steak...
