you have me seriously considering running of lit garland around the cage for a sponsors holiday open house. I'll check to see if I can squeeze it around the top cage this evening as it'll be a tight squeeze
We're working on finding an affordable 12v/battery powered option as well. 
I have a small inverter that I can toss in the car

Very cool. As a big time Christmas junkie...indoors and outdoors, I like it. We did something similar in our last house. We had all the bannisters lit, as well as the mantle and some doorways. In a rental this year, so we're scaling way back, but will be at full bloom next year.
After Christmas, go to the big box stores and snatch up the LEDs at half price. They give a different glow...incans are nice too, very traditional, but LEDS are bright and use a lot less power.
Do you have any pics showing them installed instead of bunched up?
