Made it down 129 from Knoxville, over the Dragon, and well in to GA. No snow, just wet roads. I'll try the Cherohala Skyway on the way back north next Saturday.

Cherohala is very pretty, I'd love to see it with some snow on the ground. It would be pretty scary with ice on the ground, though!

seriously. not really the place for fun snow hoonage.

I've ridden all over that area on motorcycle trips. My unasked for opinion is that the Cherohala is a much nicer road to ride a motorcycle on. The Dragon is too much like working.

I think the Cherohala would also be much more fun in a car than The Dragon. Gorgeous views, perfect curves, and did I mention the views?

Highly recommended from me. I may have to take my Miata up there sometime in the near future for a convertible tour...

The Cherohala is a brilliant piece of road. Fast, scenic, and it goes to places to eat!

Xceler8x nailed it saying the Dragon is too much like work, but I definitely wouldn't complain if it were my 9-5

Slight thread jack but has anyone head of Wolf Pen Gap or Suches Loop in north GA above Dahlonega? Its a Hyw around Blood Mountain GA and i have been trying to make it up there but have so far been unable to because of rain, final projects, and exams. I have heard it described as Georgia's Tail of the Dragon (by a rider who also had ridden the Dragon). Anyone in and around GA know what i am talking about?

Suches is great riding territory. Took a trip out there as well. I think Two Wheels Only is out there.

Just checked...it is.

Two Wheels Only

Two Wheels Only is a motorcycle only campground.

There is rarely snow on the Dragon; elevation is only 2500' and most of the road is protected by the ridges and trees. You will find snow and ice on the Skyway at this time of the year. Highest elevation is 5400' so very little melts plus the roadway tracks the backbone of the mountains. I have gone for drives and had to back off the mountains in early spring. Be very careful

Yeah driving around Blood Mtn is pretty awesome. We used to run a 5k up there every year and getting there was the fun part!

Back in Michigan. Took the Cherohala and the Dragon on the way home. Cherohala was clear and dry save for a few icy patches above 4500ft. Only saw 6 other cars, I was the only on with out 4WD. Didn't need it. No, this was not the most direct route home, but it was fun. Thats what vacations for right?

We did both the Dragon and Cherohala last May and I was pretty underwhelmed by the Skyway. Seemed too wide open and if you wanted to really have fun on it you'd be pushing speeds that could get you in trouble. I much preferred the Dragon banging between 2nd and 3rd gears and never seeing speeds much over 45 MPH the whole way in a mostly stock '99 Miata.

You DO know that you don't have to be driving greater than 6/10th to enjoy a road......right?

SLight thread jack, but related:

GRM guys, how about a page with "good roads" listed? doesnt have to be too complicated, like state, town, street name, and we all could contribute. Ive thought of this for a while, but just now remembered to suggest it.

Mabie add types too, like asphalt, dirt, trail, etc....

Just a thought!

Yeah, if you're not into scenery and are just into driving, you've really gotta calculate how badly you want to have fun vs. the consequences of a HUGE ticket on the Skyway. On the flipside, the Skyway is MUCH more dangerous once you start really moving. Those sweeping corners don't seem to long or sweeping when you're hitting triple digits, and you have to hit every corner at the right entry speed, because braking in the middle of one of those is just asking for death.
