I'm not sure what type of gastro issues you have but let me share what has worked for my ulcerative colitis. After taking numerous prescriptions from steroids to biologics and having no success, I started taking apple cider vinegar in water twice a day at the start of the year. I was very close to having my colon removed due to inflammation throughout. My colonoscopy last week showed all the inflammation gone only scar tissue remains. I get to keep my colon.

Must have been a while ago? AIUI, the barium enema is pretty much obsolete at this point -- it doesn't show you anything a colonoscopy doesn't, plus it involves radiation exposure. Getting the scope into the TI depends on how good the doctor is at maneuvering it and how inflamed it is.

In reply to rustybugkiller:

I've got wall thickening in a section of my small intestine which came on 1 week after a head on car crash with severe lower back injury (L1-5) and lap belt scarring. I've done the research (to which my gastroenterologist and surgeon agree) and am pretty sure I had a hematoma in my small intestine which has caused fibrosis (or scar tissue) to form. This has caused a small section of my small intestine to become paralytic and slightly constricted which makes digesting certain things (roughage, like spinach, nuts, raw vegetables, anything with seeds, etc.). To feel anywhere normal I have to keep my diet really soft and/or easily digestible things (meat, pasta, white rice, white bread) and still have to watch how much volume I eat at one time as things just pass slowly through this section.

Eating to "the code" every 2 hours is just a PITA and even doing this I have lost 15-18 pounds over the past 2 months and I'm down to high school weight and just have low energy. I'm doing about 2 protein shakes a day to keep the caloric and protein count up but that just keeps me at status quo.

My gastroenterologist is going to review the film and see what shows up. He will then talk with the surgeon and determine the next plan of action. They have the data (4 CT scans, multiple X-Rays and now the capsule film) and hopefully will still agree to a surgery to resection the intestine. I don't necessarily WANT to get my small intestine re-sectioned but all similar situations show that this fixes the problem. It is not a common injury so Dr's want to be very sure before they choose surgery (which I can understand).

I had it done in '02, hard to believe that's been 14 years ago. I was pretty out of it, but it was still one of the most unnerving, and degrading experiences I've ever had. Might have been worse for the nurse administering the barium, but we didn't talk much.

Mine was the result of a group of Dr.s grasping at straws to figure out what was causing my sever stomach pains. Everyone of them wanted it to be appendicitis, but no matter how hard they wanted it to be that it, wasn't. Wound up I had contracted Salmonella and Shigella. Shut down one of my favorite Mexican restaurants for 3 months after they figured it out, needless to say I haven't set foot back there since. Hell of a weight loss program, I lost ~26 lbs in a little over a week.

I had the BE in 1999. On me, it is the ileocecal valve that is inflamed. The only reason he got the scope in on the third time was I asked as he was getting ready if he was going to use the pediatric scope like he had said a few years earlier in my follow-up. My Crohn's appears to be in the terminal ileum. My current gastro doesn't do BEs anymore expect under specific situations.

What happens when you swallow one of those backwards?

I wish I hadn't thought of that-- now I get images of what the "final" shot would look like. So, now y'all have them, too.

In reply to Basil Exposition:

The camera only shoots and sends images for 8 hours. Not enough time for it to go all the way through the pipes.

However, my GE did relate the tale from a conference where another GE showed images from a patient who had diarrhea three hours after ingesting the pill and saw it in the toilet bowl. Thinking that it had to be in his system for 8 hours he retrieved it, washed it off and re-sent it through the system. All which was caught on film. White toilet bowl, hand grab, washing and obligatory back of the throat shot.

I was informed that such diligence was not required. If it goes through in 3, so be it.

You have my sympathy. Anytime there is problems in your ingestion/digestion system, the uncertainty everyday can be embarrassing, mortifying and just plain disrupting to everyday life. In reply to hobiercr:

The plot thickens! My GE called me tonight at home and said upon reviewing the camera pictures he now thinks that is still stuck in my small intestine. The X-Ray tech is the one who stated the camera had passed through but my GE said the last 6 hours of pictures are all of the same area of my intestine. I bet that was exciting to review. He stated that I'm not crazy and that I have a very angry intestine. It is not ulcerative, like Crohns, but more of a purple hue.

He was going to go over the images with the surgeon (who was also at work at 7:45 at night) and they would probably have me take another X-ray tomorrow to verify the location. Surgery my be in my future.

He doesn't think the camera is obstructing the small intestine which is good because I went a little overboard yesterday with the bacon double cheeseburger for lunch and two Carnitas tacos with japalenos and hot sauce at Tijuana Flats (2 taco Tuesday baby!). Better tone that down if they're going to have to open the drain pipe soon.

Good luck with the surgery.

Guess the camera now gives new meaning to the term "Ran when parked".

Sorry to hear about it. I can sort of relate, I have Crohns, so I know all about gastro issues.

One teaspoon with 6 or 8 oz. of water ( one capful). Down it all at once. It's better to use room temp. water. Take before or after u eat. I did after. I used Bragg organic apple cider vinegar with "the mothers" ( can't seem to post a pic). I don't know if regular vinegar will give the same results. In 2 weeks I started reducing prednisone. Stopped pred. after a month. The vinegar controlled my flare ups as Humira was shown to no longer work( expensive blood test).

Oh, as an added benefit the vinegar can lower cholesterol and blood pressure. If u take Otc for heartburn your making the heartburn worse. Use vinegar. Not a doctor and I don't play one on the Internet. Your individual results may vary.

Well, it's official. I had another X-ray and the capsule is stuck in the small intestine exactly where previous CT scans show the stricture to be. I'm scheduled for surgery tomorrow at 10:30 AM. Don't know how bad it will be until I wake up. Right now recovery is expected to be a few days with an NG tube down my nose (not excited about dealing with this again) and then a few more days in hospital and then home for a week or so.

Hopefully all goes smoothly and in a month I'll be back to eating fairly normally and putting some weight back on.

Anybody else who has had a resectioning done want to weigh in on recovery time/issues?

In reply to hobiercr:

I had a sectioning done when I was ~19 to remove a Meckel's diverticulum from my small intestine. They removed about 3". The pain immediately after the surgery was intense; I couldn't hit the button on the pain med thing often enough. This dropped off quickly though over a few days. Recovery time to eating normally was very quick, like less than 2 weeks if I recall correctly. The incision in my abdomen took longer to heal up. After pulling the staples, the bottom portion of the incision opened up a bit, leaving me with a scar that looks like a second belly button. I'd call it about a month to near normalcy. I would still get weird twinges of pain from the incision site up to 6 months later when I picked up something heavy or twisted oddly. I have not experienced any issues due to the sectioning in 17 years since.

Here are the recovery cliff notes:

  • First 2-3 days are rough. Use the pain med, don't be a hero. Drink as much as they'll let you (they won't let you drink too much), or you can become constipated from the pain medication.
  • If they'll let you walk around, do it. It speeds up recovery by promoting blood flow. if won't be fun, but you'll be glad you did it.
  • The first week you'll be worthless, but that will get better each week
  • By week three you'll be recovering well and feel human
  • Be really careful with rushing your recovery once you feel better, your abdominal muscles will still have very little strength, although you'll feel good. If you push it too much, lift too much, etc. you will get hernias, which may require surgery.
  • I'd take it as easy as possible for 2 months (3 if at all possible).

I gave you my contact info over email, don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

FooBag and dj06482, thanks for your input. DJ, got your email too. Thank you.

Well damn, looks like that delusional idea of getting a Challenge car running before Gainesville is really off the books. Probably better if I just come and spectate this year anyway. Looking doubtful I'll be able to get my knee repair surgery in beforehand anyway.
