Checking out one of the local Govt auction sites I found this welding truck: Almost new 34 year old truck It looks well kept like they forgot they owned it with a whopping 1800 miles on it.

That is one serious generator and welder on there, too.

That should make a pretty decent portable welder.

I think they got their money out of it. Any municipal vehicle that lasts that is long paid for. Maybe the welding gigs were only a mile from the shop?

For services, it's much better to have and not need than to need and not have. In the latter case, the populace owuld be all up in arms over not being prepared...

I'm trying to figure out what engine is in the welder but I'm no expert on Mopar engine ID - someone wrote March 1962 on the operator's manual shown in the pictures, and per the part numbers on the manual cover it appears it could be either a 318, a 361, a 383 or a 413.

edited to add: In 1962 they were still making the old Polysphere 318 engine that had distinctive scalloped valve covers, plus the distributor was at the back of the engine on both the old poly 318 and the later LA series 318. That means this one is a 361, 383 or a 413. It's probably a 361, but it would be cool if it was a 413.

Wow, clean truck. 1882 miles on chassis and 712 hours on the welder. Current bid $9100.

What would GRM do w/ it? Keep workin' it as a welder rig, strip it for a tow vehicle, park it?

I think the Chrysler powered welder/generator is to cool to part out off of it. I think I'd keep it more or less as is, add a few custom touches - maybe some polished Alcoas, lower it a bit on heavy duty airbags, tire racks, some livery even (although Hicksville is almost too good to paint over ) - and use it as the ultimate race support tow pig.

Point dwell runs about 30 degrees unless it has dual points.

I feel like very few of us could use a self propelled 600+ amp (from what I can read in the crappy pictures) DC stick welder.

I'd sell the welder and use the proceeds to buy a 460 to put in place of that 351W, then put a flatbed on it and use it as a truck..

It closed at $9100 so they probably didn't do to bad on it. I found something I want more though. This could make for a fun drinking Party Game
