How is it different than a web page? Why have to deal with freinds and friend requests and hurt feelings about being turned down (generally, a glorified version of high school).
But, then again, most of what I do as a group already has a focused kind of communication. So, again, FB is a better way to advertise....

Lets say you have a "Group" we will call it Ann Arbor Alfa.
Your email list and local WOM has gotten you 25 or 30 loyal members.
If those 25 or 30 members know 150-200 independant people each there is a possibility that one or more of those people might be interested in joining the group, this can increase exponentially depending on the people involved.
Facebook allows you to advertise to the brother in law of the guy you know that may be an asset for you, but you may have never known he was interested in helping you.

See, I'd rather have someone find "me", since they generally were looking, as opposed to finding someone with passing interest. Especially since many people might dismiss you as blatant advertising.
People looking, IMHO, will have more interest and last longer for what I would want to get out vs. a "hey, that sounds cool, once" person.
Still, good luck with it.

Well...since you asked...
for me, at least 50% of the value in facebook is being able to keep in touch with people so I can meet face to face. Seriously...

So phones and e-mails don't work already?
Ok, but it seems like there are avenues aready in place. Facebook does add potential advertising, that's true. And ways to waste more time (it does games, right?).
What does facebook bring that a normal web page, e-mail, or a phone can't do well enough? Oh, and if you say- it will notify all of my friends automatically- then you are lazy. If it's that important, set up an e-mail list.
Still- don't see the point (outside of hooking up with other people in the same class to help study- but that's kind of moot for me.... AND you can always meet people IN CLASS, remember that face to face thing?).
Eric
I never really did my homework while i was IN class in college. I did it that night. No face to face interaction readily available without that avenue if i wanted help.
I was on facebook when it first started as well, and was college only. It was a great resource then, no matter how many people say "but you have phones!!! Human interaction oh the humanity!!!!!"
For the record, texting is enough to fill me with enough rage that i'm in danger of an aneurym. I hate Myspace. I hate what Facebook has become.

Not saying I disagree with you here... But its a lot easier to set up study groups when done on facebook than through an email list. I've done both ways, the facebook group makes it much easier.

I can't agree more here. Sure, I text. A lot. But not by choice. Its the way my generation communicates. I didn't even have a texting plan until last year when I realized how much out of the loop I was.

I have a texting plan only because that's how everyone seems to insist on communicating these days.
"Hey man, i've been trying to get ahold of you, why haven't you gotten back with me?"
"Did you call or email?"
"No..."
"Then....?"
It's gotten bad enough that i've even looked for a device that does text only for a reasonable price, because i'm sick of paying full price for a phone plan plus the texting package. I have no reason to call someone other than in emergencies typically (my reason for the phone in the first place), and apparently nobody has reason to ever call me. I'll pay $20 a month to be annoyed by texting, and get a pre-paid phone for emergencies, but i'm pretty tweeked about paying $65 a month for the package, when i only use $20 of it.

Its my only phone. I have a phone number here in the dorm, don't know what it is, never used it. I have it for the parents, grandparents, etc. And I do call people quite often. Its quite amusing to hear how uncomfortable they are on the phone.

Yeah.... the other side of the stick is that i'm on the phone 20+ hours a week talking to companies and morons within their companies, working out bugs, yelling, complaining, playing the blame game, reporting to clients etc etc etc...
I don't want to talk to anyone, either.
Actually, one other problem with facebook- if I don't join, then I can't be a "member" of whatever thing you are trying to promote.
Like this- I'm interested in autocrossing, but I'm not in FB. Since I'm not interested in FB, then I don't get updates, invitations, etc. That kind of sucks.
I've been invited to parties via FB, but can't reply, since the invitation came as an invitation to join FB. I want to participate, sure, but not with FB. But since I don't want FB, and all of it's related baggage, I can't participate.

I don't understand all the Facebook hatred. It's another outlet for people to connect, no more no less.
I never even glance at the ads on the right side of the page. I click "HIDE" every time some stupid new mafia animal farm wars thing comes through, and then I never have to see anything from that particular bit again. That's really the sum total of the aggravation and baggage I've experienced - very very little.
On the upside, I've reconnected with people that I haven't seen in 25 years and probably would never have bothered finding even if I knew where to begin. I've connected with new people who are friends of friends. Thanks to FB I may actually go to my next HS reunion when I have never attended a single one since we got out in 1982. I talk to people who live on the other side of the country and would never see them face to face.
A friend I haven't seen since 6th or 7th grade contacted me there, and I found out he's now Michael Waltrip's crew chief and in the off season he hand-fabricates custom putters which are highly prized in golf circles. How cool is that? Cool. It's also something I never would have known without FB.
I post pics of autocross events on my profile and I've had several friends contact me and ask what's up about it, and some have even gone to events now. Again, that never would have happened elsewhere. If I had a web page with the same thing, they would only get seen by anyone who happened to know I had a web page and how to get there.
I guess I'm just not seeing the "baggage" involved, or else I'm good at ignoring it. You signed up for an email account and now you get spam. You had to join something to get email. That's baggage too, but are you drawing your line in the stand and refusing to have an email account? Did you cancel your phone service to avoid telemarketers?
It's funny to see the person who railed so strongly against perceived arbitrariness in the DSG - vs - MTX debate behaving so arbitrarily himself.
I don't like Twitter and similar services because they are invasive and demand my attention every time a new tweet comes through, so I don't use them. But Facebook just sits there quietly giving and receiving information for me, and waits patiently for me to feel like logging in.

Yessir! I went to elementary school with him, we stayed friends when I changed schools, and we hung out all the time until I moved out of state in 8th grade. His father built and raced Sportsman dirt trackers - we used to go watch him at Bridgeport and Nazareth.
After I lost touch Gene learned high quality welding from his father, did some time building dirt track chassis, then got into working on NASCAR trucks, and has since moved up to Cup cars as MW's crew chief.
He contacted me out of the blue on Facebook and we spent some time catching up. I hope to meet him in person when they get up to Dover. I'd have never talked to him again without that contact.

I was caddying for a guy who was obsessing about his new putter, made by "this nascar dude". I have to say it was one of the sweetest putters I've ever used. Didn't help this golfers putting any.
See if he can hook me up with a good deal

My debate is arbitrary? I'm still asking the point of FB over the alternatives. BTW, I don't hate FB, I just don't get the point, and if someone is going to make something of interest to me, but have it only in FB, then I want a real, rational reason to join.
I hear stories of "hooking up" all the time- even my wife's HS is doing it. And her complaint about FB is all the other friend requests that are very loosely related to the HS reunion. That kind of baggage- I don't want to have to "manage" my friends, and have someone feel offended that I didn't do something. The only link that I've ever seen useful that was in the random hit was a woman in Sweden who has the same last name as me friend requested my mom. But for that one connection, are the rest even worth it?
Besides, I have nobody from HS that I really want to see, anyway.
I still have yet to see a convincing argument to do it.

Just like a real church, you can self study at The Paved Church of the Holy Cone. Seeing as how the only real things that will happen there will have been eMailed to me by you and the Furrin group ;) everything else will involve the rehashing of all the crap we put in the book.
