During all the issues with my truck, I was talking to Wayne who owns horses and bought a newish Chevy crew cab diesel for $14,000. Nice truck! He bought it from a guy that owns a body shop and it was babied and detailed to death. He offered to sell it to me for $17,000, a good deal but out of my budget.
The other day he stopped for gas and a guy wheeled in behind him and asked if he would be interested in selling the big black truck. "Sure, $22,000". Guy comes back with a $20k offer and tried to hand him a $500 deposit.
Wayne replied with $21,000 cash and I'll hold it for 48 hours for you just on a hand shake.
Done!

People on these boards get free or nearly free cars all the time, apparently. That never happens to me, either.
I thought this was going to be a dear Penthouse post.
My 80 Spitfire was free. The guy that gifted it to me took the OD trans and matching speedo out and didn't want the rest. The engine was stuck, but low mileage. I think he also swiped the diff, but gave me a 4.11 one. I had a couple laying around anyway. The body was as rust free as I've seen a Spit.

Oh yea, like THAT wouldn't get locked.
I've gotten a couple of "free" cars over the years. They almost all cost me more than if I had bought a good one to start with. And no, I never get a deal the one the OP described.

We could have been 3 for 3!
I think my best was a free sunbird convertible. Dropped it off trailer in front yard, and while i was taking trailer back to rental place some guy stopped and gave my mom $300 for it. I had it for literally 45 minutes, made $300, and i was using the trailer i rented to pick up a parts car. It was 10 minutes away too.
I have around 6 grand in my 54 belair and a guy from portugal offered me 23k cash at a cruise night so he could take it home with him. I told him sorry it doesn't have a price. I probably would have done something silly with the $ anyway like buy a few 7k cars
