People wanted cell phone service up in the Adirondacks but the tree huggers wouldn't have it. The final design is a tower all dressed up with plastic branches resembling a pine tree. They call it Frankenpine, but if you don't know what to look for you wouldn't even notice it..
BTW Hippies are all gone, Caesar killed them.
Dan
About the tree or Caesar?
No, there really is a plastic pine tree in the Adirondacks called FrankenPine.

The other part, maybe my history is fuzzy.
Dan
There is a giant fake palm tree a couple miles from my house. Looks a lot better then a giant metal tower. Hardly notice it unless you give it a good look.
I'm on both sides with the FrankenPine. It's uglier than a tree, better looking than a tower, but people are dying in the winter due to accidents and not being able to get help.
If tree hugger gets a compound fracture hiking 50 miles from the nearest logging road, maybe that big ugly tree isn't so ugly.

"Hippies. Hippies. Hippies everywhere. They want to save the world, but all they do is smell bad." Eric. Cartman.
We have one of those fake trees here too. Not as ugly as a tower. I don't care, I just want G3.
When the phone company wanted to put a tower in a ritzy part of town here, the residents raised sand about it, so they comprimised, and put up one of those fake pine trees instead. Pretty cool idea, and you'd never know what it was.
Got a notice for a public hearing last week. They want to replace one of the light poles at the local high school football stadium a block away with a cell tower. And the stadium lights will be put back on the tower.
I'm sure there were some people there to protest. As far as I'm concerned they could replace them all with cell towers. Just leave off the damm lights that shine in my windows every night.
Why don't all the hippies just move out in the middle of nowhere and live off the land without any modern amenities and reduce their impact on planet Earth.
Oh wait, then they wouldn't get to be shiny happy persons with condescending-"holier than thou" attitudes to the rest of us.
Same attitude persists around medical animal testing. That is the model which they base a procedure/drugs safety on, but people will endlessly protest animal testing. Well my suggestion if you don't like it is to NEVER use any medicine or go to the hospital. Don't worry, that nagging cough will go away, and when you go to Tibet to protest chinese imperialism, forget antibiotics and whatnot so you don't get sick. Keep those damn people diseased and weak from their vegan diets.
Just like the Who song said about 'those who spurred you on are now the ones who judge you wrong.'
These eco freaks are totally off base.
Same thing with animal labs in med school. They protest those too. I suppose they would rather that we practiced intubating their children than an anesthetized cat.

Have you not been to Moab?
I've heard they stick cellphone towers in/on church spires as well. Brings in some money for the church, no new ugly towers and you have great reception for surfing the net on your iPhone during the service. Everybody wins!
Cell pone towers are hidden around all kinds of places. This will show you some good and bad examples:

Just about anywhere you look you can see a cell phone tower. Not sure if you new but the typical cell phone tower can only cover about 4-6 miles. Less in highly populated areas, sometimes more if there are no obstructions, like over water.
The short distances are not limited by the towers, the actual downfall of the whole system is the handset itself. Hardwired "car phones" transmitted at 3 watts. A handheld phone only transmitts at .6 watts.
There's a couple of those cell phone tower trees around here as well.
Ya know, I've said it before: I don't support destroying the planet or returning it completely to a 'wild' state. There needs to be a balance. These hippie eco freaks keep forgetting that we (including them!) are part of the environment, too.
I post this image in every hippie thread. I'm sure these shiny happy people would be pretty pissed off if I stole one of their cars then ran through their shanties/tents/home/apartment/whatever the hell they live in and my reasons being: They are cancerous to society, detrimental to the health of the people around them, and a civic nuisance.
the only problem with the hippie drill is that you always have to have an expendable minority on the crew in case someone has to go outside and fix something if it breaks in the middle of a field of hippies.
