Ticketmaster sucks, but my impression is that a big part of the reason that concerts cost so much is because it's become so difficult to monetize recordings to a significant amount.

It started long before that. There was a concert promoter named Micheal Cohl who convinced bands that concerts need not be loss leaders to promote a new record, but rather a separate money making activity with higher ticket prices and merchandise. Bands were reluctant, but they did it and it's only gotten worse.

Ticket prices are out of control and the last thing they need is more BS fees added to them, and I will not support Ticketmaster.  Last show I saw I bought the tickets at the venue, and at $40/seat I thought it was a pretty good deal. But accounting for inflation, I should be able to see Rush right now for between $20 - $30 a ticket

Ticket master is why I haven't purchased a concert ticket in 15 years.

The big show sells out in 4 minutes, but the next day you can buy all the tickets you want in a "package" that only costs twice as much.

"But everyone has an equal chance of getting a ticket."  BullE36 M3.  If that were true, your wholly owned subsidiary wouldn't have half of the tickets.

berkeley'em.

It's people who set up "bots" that wait for the tickets of [insert artist here] tour to go on sale. The bot purchases as many tickets at as many stops on the tour as possible. Owner of the bot then resells said tickets at inflated prices so they can pay themselves for their hard work. I've always had a suspicion that Livenation/Ticketmaster has a stake in some of those bots to aid in profit margins on top of the venue and convenience fees.

You can always risk going to a venue and buying tickets from the scalpers.

I bought tickets to see Blink182 in San Diego this summer through some site affiliated with PetCo park. In the end it directed me right back to Ticketmaster and the insane amount of fees. 2x $250 tickets ended up costing $750 because of the "fees." They killed it in Nashville last year and it'll be rad to see them in their "hometown" so it's worth it to me but damn 50% in fees is insane.

On the other hand, I was casually on a date with my ex-gf at Disney Springs last year. Walking by the House of Blues and Less Than Jake was playing that evening. We adjusted plans, bought tickets at the box office for face value, and had a blast. I'm sure Disney includes all of those fees and whatnot but it was like $35 a ticket so I didn't care.

The last arena show I went to was Metallica during the Hardwired tour. Two seats in the lower bowl, right behind the mixing board (my preferred place to sit if I can get them) were right at $300 for 2. That was 2018-2019?

The fees have become so ridiculous, I just bought 3 tickets to see the comedian Marc Maron in Oct at the Tower Theater..........$255 for 3 tickets for a comedian. But in reality, that falls in line with the less fancy Bricktown Comedy Club, where tickets are $35-45 for the premium seats, $25 for downtown parking, + 2 item minimum. So they end up being $100+ in effect anyway.

Going out to see things live is damned expensive these days.

I used to see big venues for $25.00, with Ticketmaster charge of $2.
I clearly remember with both got stupid, and it was YEARS before your suggestion had even started making an impact.

Ticketmaster and Live Nation merged in 2010. How does that timeline mesh with when ticket prices started getting crazy?

There is a substantial chance that Ticketmaster owns the venue you last went to see live music.

There was a local place here that booked oddball bands, had local beers on tap and was a good place to go. It was bought out by Livenation. They no longer take cash, have bland, mass market beers, and cost more. They also convinced the city to put up "No Parking" signs during evening hours in a radius around the club, so you're forced to pay for parking.

No worries, man.  E36 M3 happens.  Appreciate the apology and acknowledgement of the mistake
