The Australian version of those challenges aired a few months ago, but it's fun seeing the different take.
Best part of the episode was how Becker pronounces "Stig".

I'm thinking some sensitive Messicans are making some hamster-shaped pinata's, too.........
haha the mexican thing... i'm pretty sure they couldn't get away with that here in the states lol...
Here's how I watched that episode:
Watched the first part of Aussies vs. Brits challenge, was amused.
Watched the news, was amused.
Watched the Ferrari segment, awesome! Until he put away the 288 GTO and brought out something brand-spanking-new that I didn't care about. Skipped to the Stig's lap.
Star in a Car. Who TF is this? Skip.
Second part of Aussies vs. Brits. Was still amused but getting annoyed by how rigged it all was.
Drift-off. WTF? Why didn't we get to see the Monaro & Maloo go at it? Those cars were made for that!
Proton race, was amused once more.
I love TG but they really need to cut it down to 30 minutes and leave out all the filler. And for the love of god please get rid of the "Star in a R.P. Car" segment! I don't care about those people! They can go on late-night talk shows for their 15 minutes.
In reply to Jay:
You live in Germany but don't even know who Boris Becker is?
Wait, what?
Then again, maybe you weren't born when he earned his 15 minutes. And btw, it was a few years more than a few minutes. At least he's an enthusiast who knows how to drive.
SIARPC has been part of Top Gear since the reboot about 10 years ago. Sure, some of the celebrities aren't that well known in the US - but it is a UK show. And Becker was actually a pretty good interview. I'm waiting for Jay Kay to come back and reclaim his top spot personally.
Yeah, but that's my point. 1 interview per show x 16 series = they've run out of interesting people. Maybe Becker was good, but 99% of the time it's some British Idol competitor or soap opera twit who defines "I'm a car person" as "I bought a new Range Rover three years ago, it's nice and has lots of cup holders." I'll bet most of TG's target audience in Britain don't care who these people are.
If they didn't run it every show and reserved it for when they actually got someone interesting, that would be okay.

I am sure the BBC does some sort of survey to make sure people aren't changing channels when a particualr segment comes on. The fact that it has been there since the start means it must be somewhat popular. Some of the "stars" probably get on as they are enjoying their 15 mins of fame in the UK but are lost on us.
Uh, Clarkson's interview segments are written into his contract and is one of the few permanent fixtures in the show.
Don't forget that Clarkson is the primary reason the show exists and since his chat show failed, he wanted to combine it with the only other successful thing he'd ever been a part of, Top Gear.
Go back and watch the interviews with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz or Seasick Steve or Brian Johnston, let alone Michael Gambon, Boris Johnson or Jay Kay. Then tell me they aren't interesting. I think the fact that you may or may not know the person ahead of time helps it to be interesting as it is a bit of an unknown whether the person is interesting at all.
I like the star sections most of the time, especially the interviews with Seasick Steve, Brian Johnston, Eric Bana, and Tom Jones
I still haven't seen the gambon episode
rupert grint killed it in the r.p. car lol, surprised me very much. Jay kay needs to come back for the new car, couldn't believe they didn't invite him to the inauguration of the new car
Maybe now either uk or us top gear will have dempsey on the show in an r.p. car
another thing I like about tguk is the f1 driver section, when it happens. Always entertaining to see someone who can really drive oing around the track too fast in a slushbox lol
Loved the tribute to Senna, especially when they brought out his old f1 car and let Lewis Hamilton drive it around the track and he did it one handed
I really can find no wrong with top gear.
Oh: and the near death experiences of stars in the car are ALWAYS entertaining. ex: Hugh Grants jump when he took the last corner way too wide or tom cruise's 2 wheel cornering lmao
Watching the stars who aren't car people drive is just as much fun as those who can. The usual panic, ham-fistedness and the like is great to watch, especially from someone with a polished public image. Also, I hadn't heard of Seasick Steve before the interview and I'm really glad I found his music. I'll bet Dempsey would jump at the chance if he got invited, that would be fun to watch.
I always felt that the Jay Leno version of SIARPC was a great example of how to do things completely wrong.
Watching it now.....and I love the reference to panel beaters shaping the old Ferraris with stumps.

I've heard that one reason they do it is that SIARPC gets UK viewers who don't care about cars but who the celebrity. (...and as near as I can tell from the Daily Mail and the Sun, they LOVE celebrities.)
C'mon, who wouldn't tune in to watch Lindsay Lohan run the track? They'd probably make her do it drunk.
