Only on the ground for one day and my business will be complete by noon. I'll be in Lawton, OK with the afternoon free, I fly out the next morning.
Besides Geronimo's grave, what's out there?
Dan

I have been there... moved a friend and his new Wife there (she was from there originally) out in Ponca City in the North East corner.. the next morning after pulling in, I stepped out onto her mother's back porch and as far as I could see was nothing but scrub lands.... and all I could think was.. "why would anybody want to live here?"
and btw.. if anybody gives you directions to "turn at the next light" they are talking the next light being 10 miles down the road
Turner Falls is nice but not near Lawton.
They also have a nice road course at Hallet, near Tulsa and a couple of very nice off road parks. None of it is near Lawton.
I guess you could go to Lake Ellsworth. It looks about like any other lake in Oklahoma. Boat rentals are probably cheap and it beats the night life in Lawton.

Drive out into the vast scrublands. I mean, there really is nothing out there, so why not marvel at nature? You just can't see that kind of nothingness anywhere else.

Ever been in West Texas?
Not far from Lawton is a nature preserve that has a heard of bison and has a recreation area , a lake and a small mountain to drive up. The name escapes me.
If you're going to Oklahoma, be sure to see... The Red Dirt. Yup, world famous Red Dirt. You can purchase a can of it to take home. Otherwise, I think that part of OK looks about like west Texas. As in, why in the world would anyone come here? At least it isn't Ardmore, where I spun a rod bearing in the 220D while pulling the only hill in Oklahoma, known locally as the Arbuckle Mountain Range.
I have a disclaimer in my papers saying I play with explosives and exzempt from dog sniffing etc. at the airports, is this dirt gonna light up?
Dan
Ah, what do you do for a living? For whom? Exemption for smelling like explosives sounds like a plot line for NCIS.
If I were going anywhere near Oklahoma City I would try to find time to see the Murrah Fed Bldg memorial...
Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - Buffalo, elk, longhorns, prairie dogs etc running around loose. Hillclimb the rental up Mount Scott . Drive through, stop in Meers for a burger.
Fort Sill Museum - Do you like cannon? Not sure how tight is to get on post these days.
There's a buffalo here here in town. I see deer almost daily in my yard, except during hunting season for some reason. Prairie dogs are those cute little exploding targets, right? Seen them. Longhorns, well, Bevo is for BBQ (Gig 'Em!) OK, been there done that.
2 best things in OK: The Wanamaker Gun Show (10 acres indoors, twice a year in Tulsa) and Hallett.

Oil, and to get out of Arkansas.

You must have missed the Wichita Mountain Range and those hills in the OK Panhandle.
Nightlife's pretty slim in the area but there are Indian casinos south of town on I-44, near the Red River. Do you prefer giving your money to the Kiowa or the Comanche?

No, I've been over the hill like structures in the panhandle. A fork tube came undone there, lodged half way between the upper and lower tripple tree and blew fork oil all over my gas tank as I bottomed out on every pothole. What fond memories of that trip, let me tell you.

I haven't been to Fort Sill since shortly after Saddam invaded Kuwait. Had to go help my buddies kick him out, and never got back there.
Sometimes I miss the "thunder" Lawton lives with.
(Fort Sill is the home of the US Army Field Artillery Center and School. Practice makes perfect, and the gun-bunnies are pretty good!)
Go drive sections of Rt 66. Stroud OK has my favorite Rt 66 restaurant ever... Rock Cafe. Doesn't look like much, but its worth the stop. There is a ghost town on the border of OK and TX, IIRC. Neat.
I loved the TallGrass Prairie Preserve, but its a ways from you. OK was my favorite state on my trip this summer by far.

Burned to the ground last summer, IIRC.
OP, nothing really to see out there. If you were up in Tulsa or OKC, that'd be a different story.
You'll need to log in to post.
