Just an idle question. We have all seen these killer diesel trucks putting out +1000whp. What trannys can handle this abuse? Seems hard to fathom. Any experts out there?

My friend with a 02 Chevy 2500 Duramax would have you believe the Allison in his truck is the best transmission ever built. However with only minor tweaks to his engine the trans has failed, and needs to be rebuilt. I think the answer may be the Allison is the strongest, but even they don't last behind that sort of power unless built for it. I like to row my own gears so I had an NV4500 in my 92 oil burner, and it was a stout transmission, but I wold never think of putting 1000+ hp through it in stock form.

Allison builds the transmissions in the Abrams tanks, but I don't think they are the same as the trucks. What do you have to do to handle over 1000FtP of torque?

One advantage of an automatic vs. a manual. For whatever reason, tranny builders seem to able to build an automatic that will live longer behind a high-HP diesel.

I would imagine the shock loading on a hard clutch drop would be really brutal on every part of the drive line. Automatic, less.

To really answer the question, noone. A lot of failures I see are from converters exploding and trashing the internals. But that said, seems like all the manufacturers build "decent" transmissions, that can at least be built to handle the abuse.

Everybody bitches that the 47/8RE in the Dodges are steaming piles of E36 M3, but everyone uses them.

5 speed auto allison != 6 speed auto allison

You have to consider, these trucks now come from the factory with over 700ftpnds and 400+hp. They are built to tow 14K+ pounds right out the gate.

What alternatives are there for Dodge owners? I heard all the complaints but nothing about replacing the trans with something else.
