Gotta think some of you are watching this show.
The fact that I can find no mention of the ore being extracted by Silver Sky mining is kinda noticeable by its absence. Or did I just miss that piece of information?

I don't recall them saying anything specific is being mined. Only specific thing is the research station extracting cores.
BenB said:I don't think they've ever said, yet. This season has a good X Files vibe to it.
With a show that has thousand of watchers trying to parse clues, I cant believe that this omission has gone so unremarked.
I got no better answers than anyone else at the moment, but I'm just really hoping this season is as good as it seems through these first three episodes. So far they just seem to be leaning into the "F it. This season we're a genre show" vibe and I'm here for it.
The gray/black water that comes out of the pipes in the third episode might be a clue. It seems like most contaminated water is some shade of brown, but maybe the gray/black is just TV.
And here's a site with the most commonly mined minerals in Alaska.
Please no spoilers, because I'm saving these up to binge when Tim travels in a couple weeks. I will say I loved S1, gave up on S2 and barely touched S3 because I've been waiting for something near the quality of that McConaughey/Harrelson season--please tell me this is it.

Spoilers I do not really have, but the show has led me down the path of pursuing any and all life-source science related to spirals.
Since I am firmly rooted in the belief that True Detective is NOT a supernatural free-for all, I need the science.
Opposite Darwin's illustration, which has often led to misconceptions that evolution is a linear process, the Spiral of Life shows a radial branching out of species from the last universal common ancestor and emphasizes that evolution is not exclusively linear or vertical.
"Darwin's illustration" will mean something to those watching.
Giving us something like this illustration which includes some awesome extinction events that essentially reset the life on earth. Kinda what the nerds were looking for.
But then I get into chemical physics and run into this weird concept and wonder about the nerds at TSALAL. This feeds into the spiral theme and the ying/yang of spirals that go in opposite directions like the ones in season 1 vs the ones in season 2
On the topic of mirror images, Peter is assumed to be GOOD and Hank is assumed to be BAD.

This is way more like x files and sci Fi. Probably the best part is Jodie Foster playing a zero berkeleys given hardass cop in the middle of nowhere Alaska.

What would be the minimum age you'd recommend for kids to watch the first season? My 15 y.o. daughter is very mature for her age but some parts of Season One give me pause...
In reply to stroker :
I'd say 18. Plenty of body mutilation, occult themes, a sex scene here or there.
Look, overall I'm enjoying this season but there are also a LOT of red flags that it's going to turn in to a massive trainwreck, despite Jodie Foster and Kali Reis's best efforts to act their way out of it.
1. They did the thing where they used the name of the show in expository conversation. At least they didn't break the 4th wall when they did it.
2. Lots, LOTS of creepypointing. You know that thing of where someone stares with a menacing/blank/otherworldly gaze and points with their arm straight out and maybe the index finger bent a little bit. Like, o think there's been at least three or four creepypoints in four episodes. That seems like a lot.
3. Uhh, this thing is only six episodes? Man there's a LOT on the table after four episodes. Five and six are going to need to bang through some narrative to clean this mess up a little bit.
Still better than most stuff on TV right now, so I'm in 'til the end. But, man, this one could go sour in a hurry.
Still watching but I am preparing myself for a "Lost" style conclusion where the whole thing turns out to be some supernatural phenomena.
The premise of a Real Detective show is that someone did something for some motive and it is up to us the audience to put the clues together and solve the crime or be surprised at the end. In this case, we seem to be lacking a motive and maybe even a crime if the researcherdsdied by magic juju bean ingestion.
In reply to NOHOME :
I've got no issue with supernatural doings, or even with a traditionally "straight" show going magical. But if you're going to have magic and spooks or whatever, even your magic has to follow rules, and your narrative conclusions have to abide by those rules. In other words, magic can solve the characters' problems, but not the writers'.
In reply to JG Pasterjak :
Hate to agree, but I have to agree.
If I were a betting man, they wrap it up with some permutation of:
1) Mine is in cahoots with the research station, they dug up some sacred artifact that was supposed to stay buried
2) Obvious evil business woman is evil
3) Capitalism was the real villan all along
********FINALE SPOILERS!*******
So in the end, certain things were never explained. What caused the bleeding ears? Why were the Tsalal scientists frozen with terrified looks on their faces, as if mid-scream? It seems like the supernatural is all that's left as an answer. And if the show wants us to conclude that, I'm fine with it.
The show turned out to be a "Chick flick" in the end.
The lack of any kind of police professionalism with and between Danvers and Navarro was hard to watch.
There was nothing else compelling to watch so it served our purpose.
Looking for something else to watch. Anything good out there?
Pete
I enjoyed the show for the most part, but it didn't exactly stick the landing. Too many story threads not followed up on, too many completely inexplicable actions by the characters, just too many things that didn't make any damn sense. And they REALLY tried to force in some of the Season 1 stuff that just didn't fit with this story.
Overall, the show was really well shot, the atmosphere was great, and I loved the actors for the most part. But the writing, ultimately, was a letdown.

Amen.
