I'm always reminded this time of year why I prefer to rallycross as opposed to autocross but here's my question.

My 10 rx8 is CSP or STX as it sits due to the test pipe "issue" but otherwise only has a FSB, so for the wonderful people of GRM what would be best for pax this year?

I just really wish solo was set up like rallycross though.

Are you running R-Comps or street tires?

Street tires, unless I stand a better chance in classing on R comps, then may pick up a set.

So your RX8 has no cat at all? Pretty sure one is required for ST* classes, if the car has 2 stock you can remove one but the other has to stay within 6" of stock location.

Do you have any nationally competitive STX or CSP cars in your region? If you do, it doesn't matter what class you're in - you're at a significant disadvantage. If it were me, I'd probably run in STX. Assuming the cat situation allows. I don't think there's been a fully built RX8 run in CSP, the miata has that class pretty well on lockdown. STX is a bit more open but the Frisbee twins seem to be the new go-to.

This isn't an issue with SCCA classing - you have a car that currently doesn't fit, like many others. Don't be a proponent of a "me" class. Go run DSP and if you want, just do the maths yourself with the CS PAX.

QFT

I'll be running a woefully unprepared Miata in CSP this year on street tires. Whatever, that's fine. I'll have fun anyway.

RX-8 is in DSP not CSP.

Don't get me wrong I always go to have fun no matter the situation, I just like to be competitive, not class leading, but not left behind either.

Btw I'm in the DC region, so those who have autocrossed with them before know theres a lot of sticklers on the solo side of life.

Again with the damn thick ass rule book!

Maybe I should just get another dd and put my time in the protege for rallycross...

Just run DSP, if you're constantly finishing out of the top half, get r-comps. An rx-8 should still be reasonably competitive in DSP locally.

If you run with WDCR, I suggest you contact them and ask where they want to see your car as it is.

Right. Should have remembered that, since there's a mean one in my region!

I also run the DC region, and I think you're painting a bad picture. We do stick to the rulebook, but I know for a fact you could talk to your other CS competitors, explain to them you don't have a cat, and it will likely not be an issue. In fact, a good friend of mine ran an entire season in his RX-8 in CS, without a cat, and since he explained it no one cared.

I think you will find a lot less sticklers in person than online.

It's only a problem if someone in your class protests it. Be open about it and ask for input and you'll be fine. Be a sneaky shiny happy person and expect more people to not be nice in return.

You can't please that guy and there's always one at every autocross. 1) Don't worry about him. 2) Make sure you aren't that guy.

In reply to moxnix:

We have talked before at a few rallycrosses and Tbh I forgot about that until now lol.

And you are all right, I just need to get back in to the swing of things and be open with the competition but most importantly not be a dick.

I guess what I'm complaining about is more so the exacting classes the SCCA has as opposed to NASA sanctioned events I've been to, they allow more of an open ended build of your car where as SCCA is quite per a rule book.

Just ask your fellow competitors. I'm willing to bet they won't mind as long as you're up front about it.

Like the part where somehow the addition of an LSD to my NA Miata (R-package) makes the car magically able to keep up with newer miatas and S2000's in STR.

I like a hopeless challenge personally. :P

I once competed in a multi-day event in HS running Hoosier TD vintage racing tires on my Mini. I got the ok from the organizers before hand. There are not any DOT approved R compound tires for my tiny 10" wheels. Those things took some time to warm up. That was the only time I spun that car. Eventually the got a little hear in them and then they were stickier than the A008s I was normally running. I second (third?) the idea to discuss with the organizers and perhaps even the fellow competitors. This is a local event and not nationals.

Throw the cat back on and run Street? That actually sounds like the path of least resistance to me, and probably the most competitive venue (although a good DSP build should be pretty competitive, but that's no longer a street car.)
