I knew there was a reason I never wanted to join one. And I went to a college of about 5,000 undergrads that had 35 fraternities and almost no other social life.

Those types of stunts aren't confined to Frat houses. Elephant walks were a way of life if you were caught in the wrong dorm at my college.
Along with getting shaved.
But instead of making you toe the line it became that much more fun to try to beat the system and not get caught.

In the dorms around me the elephant walk had the line of the people they'd caught headed up the stairs. All of them were sans trousers and they were gripping the "trunk" of the guy ahead of them in line. Many times there was also a banana involved.
It's amazing what a Them vs. Us mentality can dream up. Also when there's alcohol involved it's amazing what seems like it would be fun.
I was never caught, but I had many friends who were.
