I haven't even left for BMT yet, I've been in DEP for almost a year now and leave in January. Right now I don't want any more delays so I'm just going to proceed with BMT and my tech school training and then try to make a move from there if possible. I got suckered by the local recruiter about my degree not being a technical degree and how I couldn't even apply for OTS with that, it's my own fault for not doing more research. But hey I got a date to go to BMT and I can't wait to leave. I've been exercising and training like crazy as if I were training to pass the PAST with flying colors haha.
If they send artillery to Austrailia, I may get to go.
My last NGM indicates that you do really want to if that means you will be anywhere near the Blue Mountain slot canyons.

Delayed Entry sucks. I'm glad mine isn't going to be a year, but damn. berkeleying cut backs. That is all.

I have this suspicion that it's my recruiters fault lol (jking). I've been going to all of these DEP calls with other recruits for a year now too. And some kids have sworn in after me and have already gone through BMT and their tech school and come back to say "hey" at another DEP call. While I'm still waiting to go...it's very frustrating but it's only 9 weeks away now.
I know a large chunk of time for being in DEP was for certain qualifications for this position that I'm going into, but other than that, this waiting game has sucked.

Off the top of my head: Germany, Korea, Guam (actually part of the US), Kosovo, Cuba, Japan, Italy, UK, Bahrain.
and every nation that we have an american embassy........
Embassies are sovereign soil, so military duty there is not on foreign soil

You're looking at it all wrong...

Also, the AF is cutting positions across the board and that includes training. So with fewers trainers, that means a longer wait for all of your training.
If you want to pretend you are at Lackland already, lie in you bed, produce two quarters and pratice tapping them together in a ryhtmic fashion.

I say again, berkeley cutbacks. Whomever originated the idea that we have enough Marines is an ass.
We're sending a bunch of guys who like to drink to a land where they like to drink. I don't see how this is going to end well.
Yeah, but their beer has a bit more octane than ours.... I've seen a few of our guys get knee walking falling down crosseyed hammered drinking a few of what they have in OZ and England...

Do you guys know how much revenue a base generates? Most of the countries are glad to have us there, as long as the money keeps flowing in.

IIRC, when Subic and Clark closed in The Philippines, the dancing and personal entertainment industry darn near rioted.

I'm sure it'll be a challenge at first, but I have confidence they'll adapt.
I THINK: It's pre-positioning. Like Diego Garcia. I expect you active mil doodes to continue to deny it's existence. I ain't a mil doode. Anyone else can google it or there's probably a wiki for interesting but always something wrong info. You can't dump 30K troops on Diego. Where else you going to put that many? Bahrain would be A BIT too obvious. Saudi won't take them (can't have infidels [that would be us] touching holy Saudi soil). So, Oz is as good a staging area as any. Now, the question is: Why? Should I revive my "The Next War" thread? It's still valid. Other options could be some E36 M3 hole in Africa (pick one), the Arabian Peninsula (not Saudi), etc. We ain't gonna invade China, Viet Nam (tried that once under a different DEMOCRAT president, didn't work out too well,) or anyone else currently buying our crap paper and selling us trinkets.

Sounds like Dale Gribble/Rusty Shackleford. "I tell you that they record the superbowl 6 months in advance down in Mexico"

The installations we have in Kuwait and the Horn of Africa could easily hold 30k+ troops. The Australia move is probably based on a number of things: we're downsizing in Korea and Hawaii and still need a good footprint in the region; the Aussies are one of our closest allies and we are constantly training with them both here and there, so why not; with most of the troops leaving Iraq by year's end, there is not a significant amount of American forces in the region to keep Iran in check -- it makes for a good place to stage troops to back-fill those that would rush in from Kuwait were something to go down in the region.

Well, for starters Indonesia is the world's most populated Muslim country. And Ambon, Indonesia is ~250 miles from Darwin.
Then there's East Timor, Malaysia, Papua Nuigini, Myanmar, Bangladesh (used to be East Pakistan). All potentially open to Chinese influence / economic colonization. Plus, there's an assload of oil and gas in the Timor Sea. China has a large navy that patrols the region, so it seems natural to want to balance that power.
That's off the top off my head. I lived in Darwin on and off for 5 years in my youth - not a bad place to be stationed :)
