Lots of speculation, not many facts yet.  Two in the car confirmed dead.

I'm not willing to speculate on this myself right now.  Too many scenarios without much in the way of facts to point to why this happened.   Car was supposedly traveling at a high rate of speed after being directed to a secondary checkpoint.  No signs of explosives or a detonator according to one report.

If you are expecting friends/family from Canada across the border, or are crossing yourself, multiple border crossings in NY are now closed.

No shortage of BS and speculation at this point, I guess it'll take some time before we find out what really happened.

We're not too far from there and we cross the border 4-6 times a year. We'd discussed going today but put it off til next week.

If we'd gone today we would be stuck in NY state right now.

Until I hear more, the the most important takeaway at this point is cross-border travel for the holidays.

What I have seen just recently is a security video of a light colored car approaching at a high rate of speed and getting airborne (I guesstimate 5' or higher) before crashing offscreen.

Also, the latest reports are that the car was traveling towards Canada instead of into the US.

Super bizarre incident, nothing else attacked so far, and the only group I can think of that has an interest in closing off US-Canada border crossings is way too good at planning to attack a very lightly used touristy border crossing first. It's even possible that it could be an accident, although the fact that it happened the checkpoint makes that pretty unlikely.

That was my thought, but the media wants to call it terrorism even though they have no idea what really happened.

Per ABC News: "Gov. Kathy Hochul said there is no evidence that the crash and explosion Wednesday on the U.S. side of the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the U.S. to Canada at Niagara Falls, New York, was a terrorist attack."

If this was an accident there was something really odd in that car to blow up like this. As you can see from the pics this explosion was huge and blew the car into many tiny pieces, apparently they weren't sure if there was one person or two in the car for a while, latest sources are saying 2 again. They also say it burned down so badly that not much beyond the engine was left:

Edit: From this guy's description, if it was an accident it would have to be a stuck throttle. Apparently it was some kind of big luxury car.

... and here i thought the Corvette that self-distructed in Ocala a few days ago was impressive carnage.

I can't believe how far the car went in the air.

The latest I read was it was a couple in a Bentley who had been originally going to a Kiss concert.  You can't make this stuff up.

So the information out now is it was a 56 year old NY man with his wife driving a Bentley that were planning on going to a KISS concert on the Canada side somewhere that was canceled so they ended up staying in the US and going to a casino there. Apparently there have been some recalls for some late model Bentley's for sticking throttle pedals but who knows if that was the cause here. It will be interesting to see what more information comes out, someone must be able to calculate the actual speed of that thing before it took flight from the video that has made it out.

I think what makes it funny, and then sad, and then funny again- if this was i-4, it wouldn't even rank as a news blurb. It would be standard i-4 E36 M3. Assuming the current "stuck throttle on a Bentley piloted by two people going to a KISS concert" theory ends up being the winner.

FBI reports no signs of explosives inside:

That was a helluva explosion for just gasoline.

In reply to GameboyRMH :

Bentley lists the Continental GT as having a 90L fuel tank (I don't know if that was the model here), if it was pretty much full that would make a big fireball like we saw as the car disintegrated at high speed flying through the air into a concrete pillar (or whatever it hit). Based on the debris field there was probably a decent amount of oil, power steering fluid and ATF on the ground too to keep the fire fed.

If given the choice between a KISS concert or erupting into a fireball I'd have picked the fireball too. Of course the tinfoil hat brigade is going crazy with this. Either it was really shot with a missile to stop it or it wasn't a bentley but some sort of electric car because gas cars don't burn. We really are on the dumbest possible timeline.
