high end luxury cars ALWAYS take a big depreciation hit. Look at any used BMW 7 series.. great cars, but worth less than the equivilant 5er.

Now the Phaeton is a special case as for some bizarre reason VW tried to move WAY upmarket in one bold move and failed miserably. If they had made that car an Audi, it would have sold much better and be worth more. (but would not be any easier to work on or be any more reliable)

The w8 all road passats are stupidly cheap as well. I quarter half halfheartedly looked into one and they are an even bigger repair nightmare with 0 aftermarket support. i doubt there are many people on the planet that are truly familiarized with these complicated beasts.

Bimmers are repairable..

There's an interesting thing that happens to used big luxo cars. Generally, used car buyers don't buy big luxury cars and luxury car buyers don't buy used cars. Makes for interesting times for those of us that don't care about having the next best thing in the car world and just want nice cars.

Wow.

It might be the type of car to lock away in a garage for 35 years in hopes that its rarity will make it appreciate again.

I think the writing was on the wall when it first came out though. Had "white elephant" written all over it.

We service about a dozen of them. I would prefer an A8L, but that may because I am really Jason Statham.

I don't think so. If nobody wanted them when they were new, nobody's going to want them three decades later. Sounds like a waste of 35 years and some garage space to me.

That would be a poor investment... the general rule about collectible cars is "popular then, popular now" which is what makes them valuable. Few cars break that rule (Chrysler winged-cars).

I've read the Phaeton is an awesome car... but simply left everyone thinking, "doesn't VW own Audi...Why are they competing with themselves...?"

We've casually thought about one, but after hearing about the maintenance issues, will think better of it now...
