I'm trying to rack my brain and figure out what year Das Auto, the VW spokesman (spokescar?) who flirts with cute redheaded customers and has a talk show, is.
He has:
Old style bumpers
Headlight covers(rather than just sealed beams)
The VW emblem on the hood at the rear of the central chrome strip
Small amber turn signals
I figure '65

Close, '64.
I'm pretty sure it is a '63.
It doesn't have the Wolfsburg Crest at the base of the chrome strip on the trunklid (near the handle). Last year for the Wolfsburg Crest was 1962.
It has the narrow rear licence plate lamp cover ( 4 seconds into the video link above). In '64, they changed to the wider license plate light.
So the only year for narrow licence plate light and no Wolfsburg Crest was 1963.
However, the lack of a horn ring on the steering wheel would indicate '64 or later. A lot of those horn rings broke off, so I'm still leaning towards '63. The red car they started with looks pretty unmolested - note the radio delete panel in the dash.
When I was a kid, I could tell the exact year of any beetle at a glance. These days, so many parts have been interchanged, it is almost impossible. But if the hood and trunk lids on that car are correct, then it is a '63.

Weren't those lights referred to as "Pope's Noses"?
According to them, it's a '64.

If the bug started talking to me, I would ask how much for him

Yeah, but Herbie could DRIVE! I haven't seen all the commercials, but Das Auto is always just sitting there like a bum. Bum! ;) It is a sharp car, but for a factory backed car I wouldn't expect anything less.
