i bought a tungsten ring from the same place we got my wife's engagement and wedding bands for the wedding, which as it turns out is about a 1/2 size too small in the summer as my fingers tend to swell when its warm and shrink when its cold. the solution: 12.99 tungsten ring off of amazon with free prime shipping.

now i wear the larger ring in the warmer months and the small one in the colder months. both have held up really well, wipe them off once in a while on my and its like new again.

Well, SWMBO ordered the ring a short while ago. It's a rather nice 8mm Damascus stainless ring that we're having them notch out on the edges. Have a picture of the ring we used as the basis for the shape- it's a Tungsten Carbide ring that looks kind of like interlinked infinity signs, but can't post it from the computer here. SWMBO is almost more excited about it than I am since learning about more about the material. It should hold up just fine through normal use and the ligher stuff I'll leave it on for, but she's already said we'll figure out a good way to safely not lose a one-of-a-kind ring when I take it off to do work that would be dangerous to leave it on for.

Heh. No, though there WAS one rather interesting ring we saw on Etsy that essentially hinged and expanded out to look similar to that.

The ring it was based on was this one. The one we're having made though won't have the diamond or the grooves on the surface and will be Damascus stainless.

Yeah, I have to throw my hat in with the Tungsten rings. I bought mine from a local jewelry store and have broken it twice by dropping it on tile flooring (life time warranty). However, it has never had a scratch and has gone through some E36 M3 on my hand. Still looks new. This current one is 3 years old and could be thrown in a sales case and fit right in. I also have a Ti ring with a wood inlay that I got for Christmas last year. If you want one ring that can take a beating, look at Tungsten.

SWMBO has said that if my wedding band was handled the way her rings were- we went out and looked at a lot so I could get a feel for what she liked and then I worked with a shop to design them without her seeing them- she would have most certainly gotten me a ring with a wood inlay- probably a Tungsten one. I'd have liked it- I think they look very nice as well- but think I'll be much happier (and less worried about damaging it) with the one we're getting.

My wife and mine are wide 24 carat gold bands I hammered/welded out of a 1 oz gold coin (back when such things were $300). 12 years on, it's picked up several layers of scratches, but as SVreX says, gold is so soft that it'll take LOTS of abuse and practically self heals. As nice as other metals are, nothing looks quite like pure gold. All the scratches and dents just give it character and are a nice metaphor for something.

Fun project. 24 carot is SUPER easy to work with. Just a hammer, bench vise to pound against, something round to bend it around and a torch to anneal it when it work hardens and then weld it. When my wife's was resized a couple years ago (didn't quite have the cajones to cut into it at this point), the jeweler complimented it and asked where I found it. :)
