I have a complete drum to drum ford 7.5 axle. It has 4.10 gears, LSP rear diff cover with cap supports, and a welded carrier. I am asking $200/obo. I am located in blacksburg VA right off 81. I can help with transport. I can ship on your dime. PM me for pics.
I'm looking for a rear end that has or can have posi, snd it can be narrowed to 49 inches. How bad is a weded carrier for Auto-X? I've seen them on road racers, a bit of a challenge to move around the pits, what do you think?
For all the work involved in narrowing one, I wonder if I shouldn't just find one closer to home.

They suck on road racers unless you spend a lot of time with 2 wheels off in the dirt. Since auto-x is tighter turns - I expect they suck even harder.
Limited slip yes, welded solid, no. Unless you're in the mud.
The guy is 9 hours away bit sasid he may take a drive up. Gonna pass.
I tore my frame on the S10 at the Challenge due to.... yep you guessed it, welded center, sticky tires and a right turn off the line, but mostly the welded diff
Jensenman just had to change the diff in the Jensenator because it was a rather tight race diff. It just wouldn't turn. At all. He swapped in a street diff. I was hoping to see him test it this weekend, but it isn't gonna happen. Welded would probably just go straight.
Yeah, with anything approaching sticky tires a welded diff is NOT the hot setup for AX. That thing just would not turn. If you have to stay low budget (like Challenge style), try running an open diff with low rear roll stiffness.
I ran a car with a welded diff in autocross for a number of years and I wouldn't have run it any other way. If was a car modified to production class, gutted interior and modified suspension, not at all street legal. Front engine rear drive with a stout 2.0L engine. I used wide race slicks with the front the same size as the rear which helped in the tight turns. With a 4.63 rear gear I could break the rear loose anytime I wanted in 1st & 2nd gear which also helped in tight turns.
You do have to change you style of driving and your suspension set up with a locked rear end or you could end up slower with it then with an open rear.
The only thing I ever broke was a clutch. I did have a stronger driveshaft then stock though and since the car was light (1900 lbs) the trans help up fine.
