I think you're weird and suspicious from the texts you send me on my smart phone.

Klayfish wrote: I don't use Facebook. I created an account in 2009 or 2010, only because it was the only way I could get results from go karting I was doing at the time. Never used it since. Don't tweet, have never sent a text message, I have a dumb phone, and don't use other social media. If that makes me out of the loop, so be it. I'm not for it or against it, just honestly have very little interest in it. My current cell phone contract is about to expire. When I get a new one, I'm going to get whatever free or nearly free phone they have. If it's a "smart" phone, so be it, but it just doesn't excite me all that much. I do use e-mail plenty and am active on several forums, so I'm a step above communication by smoke signals. Is something wrong with me? Berkley yeah, but it ain't got nuttin' to do with not using Facebook.
this could almost be me ... 'cept no facebook account , and I do occasionally text ( maybe 40 - 50 in my life) and my current phone has no contract ( $100/6 mo.)
like Klayfish I do use e-mail and I am on several forums

what does piss me off is those that would criticize because I don't buy in to the "always connected" thing ... I sorta like being out of touch some of the time
The wife and I have 3 computers for the two of us. I used to work as a computer programmer/analyst. Being retired we spend a fair amount of time using our computers every day. We use our e-mail every day, I have a website, and we both are members of a number of forums.
We do not use Facebook, Twitter, or any of the social media stuff.
We have cell phones which we use most every day. We do not have smart phones or send text messages. I had the voicemail turned off because the wife could never her phone out of her purse before the call went to voice-mail. I can count the number of people who know my cell phone number on both hands. People who need our phone number get the one for the landline with the answering machine.
Does that make us Luddites? We really don't care and think those that must be always "connected" to someone might have mental stability problems of their own.
I don't have social media accounts... Unless truck/car sites count. Sometimes I like to just sit outside and watch the animals in my yard. It's nice to not talk to people or here their garbage every now and then.
I get way more done in the garage not tweeting everytime a draw blood.

I'm super excited about the place I move into in May. It has a back deck. I'm gonna sit out there, drink whiskey, and smoke cigars. And that is it.
I'm too connected most of the time. I'm on call for emergency service 24/7. My cell phone number is on most of the automatic doors for a 2 hour radius from my office. I check my company email several times a day. I spend countless hours on here. I have a smart phone, a tablet, a net book, a lap top and a desk top computer. I love it when I can be a Luddite. I look forward to it. All of my best vacations are the ones with no internet or cell service. We spent a week in the Turks and Caicos Islands last summer. My cell phone and computer never came out of my bag. It was relaxing, to say the least.
The GRM forum is as close to FB as I want to get. I tried it for a couple of weeks, but the ratio of intelligent conversation to senseless drivel on FB is astounding. At least here the drivel is entertaining. I still get friend requests from people I don't even remember or know. I'm starting to think the it's less of a "I Love Me" site and more of a "Please Love Me" site. Kind of reminds me of feeding pigs when I was a kid. They all wanted my attention.
If I didn't stay friends with someone after high school, there's probably a good reason. I don't need to "connect" now. All my good friends from back then still get together for beers and BS at least once a month.
As far as a business necessity, most of my customers are multimillion dollar companies. I don't think they would use FB to find me. If I was dealing with the general public I would probably have a FB page but I would pay someone else to deal with it. I do have a web site, I pay someone to manage it. 95% of my business comes from word of mouth, 2.5% off the web site and 2.5% off the yellow page add. I've got better things to do with my life.
I will try to keep the mass murders to a minimum though.
Plus 1 to Frank.
A nice calm evening on the porch is a wonderful thing and weekend mornings will usually find me out there with a cup of coffee watching the birds at the feeder. Wonderful.
I'm on linkedin--that's it.
I'll eventually get around to doing an FB for my biz, but I already have a website.
At 40 and married, I have no need for an FB account. My feed would be dominated by photos of friends' kids and I have zero interest in that. My actual, real life friends text/e-mail me on a regular enough basis.
I perceive it as too much of a passive-aggressive pissing contest to show everyone how great your life is. It also seems like a big "look at me mommy" attention grab in the quest for getting something "liked". BFD.
As other forms of social media get more popular, FB will fade out quite a bit. Apparently it's already happening with the younger crowd thanks to twitter and instagram (I don't care about those, either)
cliffnotes--author of article is a boob who is worried about keeping up with the cool kids.
From what I have seen of the level of rudeness and disconnectedness (is that a word?) of the people I see daily farting around with their smartphones playing games on Facebook etc instead of driving or conducting business, if that's what it takes to be one of the cool kids then I will never join their ranks.
I use technology. It does not use me.
Facebook is an awesome way to follow rally. For what thats worth. I "like" drivers that dont post in English just so I can check out the pictures.

I have a friend who runs an automotive machine shop that specializes in high performance, and race engine building. He has no internet presence whatsoever, and probably no email capability, and has more work than he needs. A few of the other shops I deal with are the same. Not everybody needs it.
I have a business, and a very low key internet presence, but don't do facebook. I will not generally do business with anybody that wants me to like them on facebook, or offers me deals if I like them, or uses facebook to advertise.
I may or may not be a serial killer.

wait... so you don't actually look like this:

This is Kenny McCormick circa 2010 =]
Is your real name Rusty Shackleford?
I still have mine, but I never use it any more. I even deleted the app off my iPhone. I'm border line about deleting it all the way, but I still want to have it around for, something.

Not quite that bad.

That would be because you don't want to appear suspicious!
Claiming that FB, or even an internet presence is "essential" to business is every bit as ignorant as someone claiming a special value about being a Luddite.
Different businesses have different needs, and I would suggest that the majority of businesses still have very little use for an internet presence.
Retail, yes. National or international companies, sure. But wholesale? Niche markets? Service industries? Subcontract trade companies built on personal relationships? Military businesses and contractors? Consultants and professionals that deal with special private clientele? Businesses that cater to a tight local geographic customer base? Anyone with secrets to protect? Prostitutes? Drug dealers? Arms dealers (both legal and illegal)?
Would you hire a lawyer off a website? How about a brain surgeon? Secret Service agent? Accountant?
There are a heck of a lot of businesses that really don't need much of a web presence, and some that prohibit it under all circumstances.
Businesses are built on information. Some businesses need some of that information to be public. Some businesses need to protect their information at all costs.
I know businesses that have no signage, and whose employees sign confidentiality agreements that they will not tell anyone where they work or what they do.
It is ridiculously presumptive and arrogant to believe we know better than them about the needs of their businesses.

Fair enough.
I have a Facebook simply cause it is a good way to stay in touch with friends from high school have at this point gone all over the world.
If anyone I personally knew wasn't on facebook, I would find that weird. What I mean by that is anyone under the age of 28-ish.
I was a late bloomer to social media (hell, I didn't have a cell phone until I was 19, now 24). I still keep my facebook friends list small (under 100 people, all I can chat with about current life and not feel awkward or plan to go have beers with IRL). But yea, and if you are YOUNGER than me? Absolutely weird if you don't.
What this thread proves is there are a whole bunch of old fogies on GRM. Not that there is anything wrong with that...

for me ... I don't have anyone from HS that I really want to keep up with ... I have a FB account for one reason only ... sometimes people post links to things I want to view and it's only on their facebook page ... this way I can at least see the things I think I want to see (my page itself is blank)
You'll need to log in to post.
