So, across the street they had a windshield replaced. Well-known glass replacement company; two guys. I go to work.

Several days later, the well-known entity comes back. One guy this time.  I come home from work; repaired car is obviously parked in the shade.

About 20 feet in front of the car was (WARNING: REALLY OLD PERSON STUFF)

like the movie projector screen that you had to set up because you were the tallest one and it always smelled weird when you pulled the screen out to hook it on the pole.

This guy kept going to the back of the screen, taking notes, and then back into the driver's seat. He might do something at the front of the screen, but mostly moving back and forth between the rear of the movie screen and the driver's seat.

Then he folded up the portable screen, but first taking off a (vinyl?) print of something black and charty looking. He then folded up a step-stool kinda thing but it had mirror on the steps?

When he packed up his truck, he waited about 20 minutes and would go now and then back into the customers's vehicle.

TF did I see? Horoscope-driven glass chip repair?

Newish car? Like new enough to have sensors and stuff/ heads up display that needs to be calibrated?

He was calibrating the various following distance / spatial awareness / self-dimming lights sensors.

Part of the reason we passed on a 2020 Subaru Ascent was it's "EyeSight" system - the vehicle had a small chip in the windshield and the dealer, despite not budging on price, informed us that we should expect to pay $1000 for a windshield replacement, or just to add windshields to our insurance coverage (an extra $250 to our annual premium).

In reply to pheller :

$1000 for a windshield replacement was not out of line 20 years ago for many vehicles.  I am assuming that the Subaru is $600 part and $400 labor to install/recalibrate.

There is an ADAS thread somewhere on this forum.  Very much worth a read.
