Two out of two late model Genesis sedans that I saw today had their back bumpers covered with black soot near the dual exhausts. After the first I thought "she must not change the oil in that car" but then another one looked identical. Is this a thing?

My personal thinking, without any evidence, is that this is a "thing" with GDI engines. No clue if there is anything to that or not.

Hmmm. That aligns fairly well with the need to media/chemically blast the soot out of DI engines

My Focus ST hatch/rear bumper was constantly covered in soot. It drove me nuts. My Firsta ST did it too to a lesser extent. My Genesis G70 (2.0T) doesn't do it all, really; but, it's dark blue so maybe I don't notice as much?

Probably because the tips are flush with the bumper.

Higher compression ratios tend to have more soot production. DI facilitates higher compression.
