Depending on the time of day or current activity:

Leinenkugel Summer Shandy or Sunset Wheat.

Caffeine-Free Diet Cola (our local supermarket Publix brand is actually quite good and /3 the cost of Diet Coke.)

Racetrac or Dunkin Donuts Coffee

Gatorade G2 blue somethingoranother

green-bottled beers always taste skunked to me. could my luck really be that bad? Stella is the only exception in my 30 years of beer consumption.

if i'm aiming to get tanked, it's G&T, usually Tanqueray but whatever they've got on the top shelf. i haven't had a rail drink in forever.

i can just barely tolerate whiskey after a horrendously bad Jack and Dr Pepper experience 27 years ago. the smell makes me gag.

for a cool buzz quicker than beer, i like captain and diet coke.

i love the taste of IPAs but they dehydrate me worse than you can believe. gotta drink two waters in between IPAs to not feel like complete ass the next day.

i shotgunned a tall boy of coors light the other day, and it was delicious -- or maybe it was just too cold to tell how bad it was.

Fat Tire by New Belgium was my beer of choice when i was in SC. can't get it here in the Detroit area afaik.

and perhaps i've got a chemical dependency, because i'll go through about 3 liters of dihydrogen monoxide on a typical day.

I pretty much stick to IPAs in the summer and Imperial Stouts in the winter.

My favorite IPAs: Stone IPA, Dogfish 60 or 90 minute, Bear Republic Racer 5, Victory Hop Devil, Great Divide Hercules, and Southern Tier IPA

Favorite Stouts: Alesmith Speedway Stout (I've only ever had it twice, its delicious), Stone Russian Imperial Stout, Nogne Dark Horizon, Victory Storm King, Mikkeller Beer Geek, Southern Tier Choklat

I'll happily drink a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Harpoon IPA if I'm at a bar with a crappy selection. If they don't have those either... I stick to coke zero.

Same here, and my oldest son is exactly the same, but the younger one is like mom, and not at all.

We drink a pile of soda water in summer.

Almost exclusively drink beer, and as for brand, see the avatar

When I want liquor, Knob Creek whiskey or Johnnie Walker Black scotch do the trick.

Wine.

Favorite of that is Barolo. Especially if properly aged.

Second is a good Pinot Noir- normally a Burgandy is high on the list, but had some amazing samples from Oregon and California.

Third- kid of gets muddled here- anything that's good, and red.

After wine- I'd say Rum, Burbon, and Brandy.

The beer. My favorites tend to be small batches. (would love to try some of salinas's stuff, but too far away)

On that note- Angry- interesting that you can get Fat Tire in SC, since it's a Colorado beer. New Belgium does an amazing job at beer- we found a bar in Denver that had more than Fat Tire. wow. It's kind of too bad that none of our local Michigan beers is as good as Fat Tire- and they are quite good around here.

Yes, the New Belgium wheat/weiss/whatever was pretty darn good.

Beer used to be considered a staple food. I'm a beer guy, I even brew my own.

I like big, flavorful ales. I don't care for light lagers.

In whiskey land, I like good, smokey single mat scotch. I also enjoy a dark rum with just a few drops of vanilla extract and cinnamon in it.

I like what I'm seeing I just got back from a loop caddying--5 hours, two bags, 90*. For anybody wondering, the most refreshing beer ever is the shower beer. Absolutely wonderful. This one happens to be Pilsner Urquell (Dads beer is better).

My roommate and I went through a fifth of Jamison in a night last year. I quite liked it.

For all you folks who like Blue Moon, if you are looking for a "Blue Moon Light", so to speak, try out Bud Light Wheat. It is surprisingly tasty.

For guitar players: Try out some Grolsh. It really isn't a great beer for the price IMHO, but those little red things on their awesome tops make perfect strap-locks.

It's not your luck. It's SCIENCE!

Skunky flavors are the result of oils from hops interacting with UV light. Bottle color minimizes UV exposure. Brown > > Green > Clear. That's why good beers come in brown bottles.

There is an increasing push to use hop oil extracts, especially in larger produced beers. These have the "advantage" of being more stable and less prone to skunking from UV. That's why cheaper beers in clear bottles are getting less and less skunky.

And I just finished a bottle of my homebrewed Cedar Rain beer. It is meant to evoke the sense of a northern Cali forrest right after a heavy rain, and succeeds.

My IPA is almost ready to drink. 5 varieties of New Zealand hops and fermented with Belgian yeast. It's like a cross between a CA IPA, Belgian Trippel, and a Mai Tai.

In reply to Salanis:

He ain't even gone to beer skool yet and he is all learned up on it and what not. I am drinking a fine non skunky Pilsner Urquell right now with the stink of fresh cut grass on my shoes and the sun setting behind me. It tastes about perfect. They are smartypants though... they put the green bottles in a sealed cardboard box.

I like bourbons and whiskeys, occasionally beer and wine. I like Petit Syrah for wine, I'm not picky about beer. As for bourbon, lately I've been enjoying this. Its very good at the price point.

Yep! Thats why my fridge has Pilsner Urquell in green, and Pabst Blue Ribbon in brown.

Doesn't mean crappy beers don't.

I don't mean to doubt your beer craftsmanship skills, but how the hell do you manage that?

Also, that's very interesting about bottle colour/UV exposure/skunky beers. I guess that's probably why Heineken and Becks always tastes a little "off" to me.

They are really good on-tap though. Stella Artois fits in here - I think it is one of the more sensitive to skunkiness. When is good it is really good but the only way to make sure is get it on tap at a pub.

I think temps play a bigger role than UV. Nothing ruins a beer like going warm/cold/warm/cold a couple times. I always see the local beer dist. with skids out on the dock in the hot sun waiting to be loaded... you know that stuff is going to suck if was nice and cool in the warehouse.

It's hard to find Stella Artois on tap around here. Or maybe I need to start frequenting some classier establishments.

But you're definitely right...even the cheapest, local swill is acceptable on tap, (yet not out of the bottle.)
