There are statements on those identification websites along the lines of "if you mis-identify a giant puffball mushroom for one of its look-alikes and eat it, you will probably be dead in 24 hours."
So, how does anyone actually try these things? I'm sorry but I don't like mushrooms enough to take that kinda chance...
Some are easier to identify than others. Some have lookalikes that will give you a tummy-ache. Some will berkeleying kill you. Again, I’m not a mycologist. A couple times, I’ve had friends send pics asking “Is this a Chanterelle?” And those are pretty damned easy to identify. Others? If there’s even the slightest bit of doubt in my mind, I’m not eating it without at least getting a spore print to be sure it’s not one of its lookalikes. And even then, it’s a couple small, cooked bites at a time to be sure.
Anyway, I’ll narrow my educated GUESS to Purple-Spored Puffball (Calvatia cyathiformis.) If I’m right, it should get more brown with age, peridium will break apart and release spores, and the base will stick around (for months, if you let it) as a deep purple-brown cup-like structure.
And no; I didn’t know any of that. I just read it in my mushroom ID book...which is why you should never trust the opinion of some know-it-all on the internet saying “Sure, it’s safe to eat....” which is why no one here is likely to tell you to eat it

See above. ^^^ I was kinda replying to your post and the OP’s at the same time.
It appears we have a huge patch of Porcini coming up. Unfortunately abby stomped several of them before I found out.

Ive ate a lot of puffballs, and i dont think thats one of them. They are usually more ball shaped and less mushroom shaped, also they are usually whiter. If you've never had one, you arent missing much. They dont have much flavor.
All mushrooms are edible. Some are only edible once.
Now it looks dipped in chocolate!
I wonder if this is the process of it turning "purple" or if it's some kind of bacteria or something eating the mushroom...
A dusting of charcoal on the ground usually dissuades more mushrooms.
I have a garden and eat local food whenever possible, but I'm not eating a mushroom I picked off the ground. Too much potential hazard for too little potential gain.

Stormy says she sees what you did there.

You are describing a giant puffball. This is not a giant puffball.
I was curious how many people actually die annually from eating mushrooms. My guess was “around 10.” I waa in the ballpark. I would guess quite a few of those were either people trying to get high with no clue what they were looking for and/or “I’ll give you a dollar if you eat that.”
And while deathcaps are no joke, I’ve read that some if not most who’ve died from them had severely compromised liver/kidney function.
I’m not saying “don’t be careful.” But I’d tend to guess a lot more people are hospitalized from fast food/tainted meat/veg from the grocery store than from a misidentified mushroom.

The biggest double take was the list of plants that had caused death - they had one alleged case of pine tree poisoning and a fatal garlic overdose. Wait, what?!?

Garlic, 100% more dangerous than weed.
Unless.... maybe that was a vampire?

Sounds like some enterprising individual trying to make a beer nastier than an IPA
I have not died yet but the mushroom is toast.
I dunno if I blew up due to the really hot day we had yesterday, or an animal got into it, or a kid kicked, or even if it just got knocked over by the wind.
It is incredibly light so I could actually believe the wind story.

What do I win!?
You win ten points!
Actually, I read that article you linked and did some other searches. I apparently have 2-3 large pokeweed plants in my backyard that I didn't know what they were but they are apparently quite poisonous. And with 2 little kids who absolutely love blueberries, I will be removing the pokeweed statapotamus.
So, you may not win anything but you taught me a lot!
