Get rid of it. That tiny little probe is only telling you the temperature an inch from the lid, not where you're actually cooking. I keep one of my digital probes mounted on the grate, where the food is.
As for what makes it stick, that looks like a bimetal probe. The metal bits inside the dial are remarkably fragile to outdoor temperatures, and could have shifted, gotten stuck, or started rusting inside. Have you compared it to a known good thermometer in the same place?
