Going to start copying all my CD's to the new HTPC and wanted something that will also download/update whatever the metadata with album covers and such.
That way all the music will be nicely categorized and such.
Back in the day I used to use winamp, but no idea what the newest/hippest stuff is now.
VLC is my player of choice if I'm not using iTunes (silly iPhones)
I think lifehacker.com recently did a feature on music sorting utilities and players. Might be worth a look:

For tagging and sorting MP3's:

Many of the HTPC software front ends provide a way to play music, VLC is leveraged in quite a few since it is Open Source and has a lot of plug-in capabilities.
VLC for movies . . .Winamp for just about everything else.
I also host my radio show using a Winamp plug in so I guess I'm kinda biased.
reagular old WMP with the Kenwood skin - you can have it search for the album art ETC, and it will follow the media to your portable player if it suports WMA
(and yes, I was actually listening to DT when I took the screen shot - Portnoy for president!)

itunes.
I abhor itunes. The girlfriend and I are ditching are iPhones as well as soon as the HTC EVO 4G is released.
I like having EQs and such.
Someone on another forum mentioned, "MediaMonkey" been persuing their web site and it looks pretty good. Anyone using it?
Oh and being able to do high quality rips of the CD is a concern. I'm not big on 128bit rate MP3s for music quality, but I also don't want to store the full size files.
What is the best compromise on sound quality vs size?
I've been using Media Monkey. It works great, is super easy to use, and supports the Ipod, so I use that to manage my Ipod as well. I don't even have Itunes on my computer!
If you want a LOW memory/overhead player (itunes / WMP) can be HOGS:
An older version of WinAmp: WinAmp v2.23 (even WinAmp has gotten bloated)

Windows Media Player on Windows 7 is actually quite good. Has all of my album art, plays everything crisply, and isn't a resource hog. I have it on right now actually.
Itunes for music, VLC for movies.

What? You can play music on these things?
mostly Itunes. I am a sucker for Podcasts...Midweek Motorsport and Formula 1 Blog Podcast FTW!
iTunes on the Mac for podcasts and the portable music side of things, foobar2000 playing back flac-encoded CDs on my PC.
I have iTunes and a bunch of CDs on my PC but mostly end up listening to Slacker.
Winamp 5.572 . . . the bloated version
