I'd look at the Motorolas, but I'd also have a look at other providers unless you really, really need the Verizon coverage. When we took a hard look at our grandfathered plan it didn't make a lot of sense to us to have it and still pay full price for phones.
We are on a grandfathered plan from 2 or 3 Verizon plan resets ago. It really is a stellar deal now (8GB data, unlimited talk/text, $140/mo for both phones combined including all taxes, and we always have 4G LTE everywhere).
You should look at Verizon's website. I don't think that's such a great deal anymore. Looks to me like you can get an 8GB plan for $70 a month now, and an additional phone is usually around $40.
I've looked. That plan after taxes and everything is literally exactly the same ($139.50/mo) except our cloud storage drops from 25GB per line to 5GB per line. However, Verizon is saying that they are kicking us off of our current plan whether we like it or not on 8/18.

You can get those deals from
Verizon for better. I held out forever because I had an old company plan but when my phone broke on a Friday afternoon (I dropped it) as I was going out of town for a week I went to the VZW store and found a better deal (and a $100 iPhone 6s).
I really like my Samsung Galaxy J3, it seems to be the "base model" without all the expensive bells & whistles. I'm an older guy, though. I just read internet pages, text my kid, etc. Don't really watch videos, or do old guy stuff like talk on it. I'm on one of Virgin's plans..unlimited talk (which I don't need), unlimited text (which I do), and 2560MB data a month (which I'm not flirting with, since I don't watch vids).
$35 a month, I love it. Doesn't seem to have as much coverage as other companies, though.
Still, that's not about my phone, it's about my provider! Galaxy J3 FTW. Maybe it doesn't have that fancy camera that lets you shoot at night, but it's a damn sight cheaper. CNET review: Not a bad phone!
