On the food thing... We only had one subpar meal the entire time; there was a small tin diner on the way out of OBX. It was just OK. Food is something they do right down there for the most part. Just about every place we went, from fancy restaurants to small deli shops were mostly incredible.

Our favorite place was called the Noosa Beach Grille. Tried it on a whim, and we ended up bringing the rest of the family there a second time, and both times it was really great. My wife claims the burger she had there was hands down the best she's ever had. Probably one of the first places we'll hit up when we get there.

Glad for the resurect ; I missed it the first time, and have super fond memories of 100's of vacations there. When I started as a kid, late '60s, early '70s, the only grocery store near kitty hawk was Wink's... simple wood building. No bright signs, bar/resturants, hustle and bustle. Just a quiet beach town. Now there's a China-mart, Lowe's, and enough commercialism to ruin it for me.
Cap'n has a different definition of "fun" than I do, but he probably doesn't like his quiet time as much !
Bret Murphy nailed it!

Last time I was there was in 03 for the 100th anniversary of flight. Unless technology (sci fi) keeps me alive till the 200th, I'll not be there again!

Definatly do miss the place.
Super glad for you and yours to have a heart time. So very nice to read that!

In reply to 03Panther :

I was surprised at how much stuff is right nearby. As in, stuff that we have at home, like big box stores and the like. But it actually came in handy a few times, because running to the grocery store, Walmart or the hardware store when we needed to wasn't an all-day affair. It's definitely not the wilderness, but there are still quiet and less crazy places around for the times when you want/need that sort of thing.

It sort of reminded me of Cape Cod, but bigger with better weather, better beaches, nicer people, and better food. I live 20 minutes from Cape Cod and I would much rather go on vacation in OBX.

If someone forced me to live near cape cod, I'd have to agree with ya. cheeky

Actually I like occasionally working up there. Cool area. But I'm still a backwoods hillbilly. Up where y'all stayed is probably still quiet enough, but not the rest of the barrier islands. Good for convenience, but way to busy for me.

Sam and Omie's in Nags Head has good, fresh seafood.  The broiled scallops are the best I've had outside of Boston.

If you're into this sort of thing, rent a kayak and explore the sound side coastline. It's been a few years, but I've rented one in Corolla.

I'll keep a lookout for Sam and Omie's. The wife loves broiled scallops!
