The Chevy / Olds thread got me thinking about this for some reason.

The first car that my father bought brand new was a 1963 Mercury Meteor sedan, white like this one, but I think his had red interior.

When I first saw these photos, I thought "How did he ever fit four kids in there?", then it occurred to me that I hadn't been born yet.

My dads third new car was a 1968 Oldsmobile "98" 2 door, 455, 4 barrel that he drove 5 kids and my mom in.

Mom/dad with one kid in front, 4 kids in the back - all members NOT wearing seatbelts. (he would yell at us to leave the upper belts alone as they would rattle on the chrome trim)

That car drank gas and would sound great when I opened all four barrels in high school.

Not his actual car but the right color and year.

Are we talking his first new car or first NEW new car?

Copypasta'd from the Chevy Vega learn-me thread:

My dad had a manual Chevy Vega for a first car. It had a giant spider on the hood, and he once stalled it on a hill and rolled backwards into an old man's USS Cadillac. He didn't particularly care for it. That's all I know about that particular car.

As for NEW new car? Hell, I don't think anyone in my immediate or extended family besides me has ever bought a NEW new car.

Yeah, no. Never happened. Probably never will happen, though I have been suggesting a Mazda CX-5 to him.

'87 plymoth horizon... it's the only NEW car he's ever gotten... we had it for 10 years and sold it before we moved back to the states... i'd bet it's still driving around Panama somewhere.

Dad's first was a 64 Corvair (Grandpa's first - and only - was a Henry J, but can't remember the year off the top - actually, I think it was his only CAR - not NEW car.)

Dad bought it when he enlisted. If I've got the story straight, grandpa helped him out with the down-payment....but told him what a piece of E36 M3 the car was (funny...I would never in a million years ask to borrow a dime from my dad....)

Anyway, Dad got shipped to Japan (instead of Nam.) I have a pic of grandpa in New Mexico, picking up the car before dad shipped out. He drove it back to WV, and apparently fell in love with it along the way...though he wouldn't dare tell my dad that. He'd send my dad pics of the car with snow up to the top of the doors and say "Can't wait till you come home and get this piece of E36 M3 outta my driveway."

Dad finally made it home. Grandpa kept the Corvair

Dad bought a Vette, which he and his buddy Wayne (someone will find humor in that) flew from WV to CA to pick up.

My brothers road in the luggage tray of said vette until shortly before I was born.

Since I was born my dad has never owned a new car and he never owned one before that. I don't count my Stepbeast's Xterra, because its her daily driver. The NEWEST car he owned is his 2004 P71.

Oh and he's had 3 P71s since I was a kid, an '86, '92, and '04. One right after the other. Having people slam on their brakes was a way of life for me for a while.

My dad ordered a new black 1974 AMC Hornet Hatchback but he lived right on the water and it was washed into the neighbors back yard in the blizzard of 1978.

My dad's first NEW car was his college graduation gift; a 68 El Camino SS. He passed that tradition on by getting me a college graduation gift; a 96 Impala SS.

1969 Camaro Z/28.. he paid cash for it right after getting out of the army.. my dad died when i was 9 in '84 and i never heard about the car until right around the time i was getting my license and my grandpa told me about it.. he said the engine would almost die when the headlights were turned on at idle and that he blew up 3 engines in a 6 month period (who knew that 8000 rpm WOT power shifts would cause those kinds of problems..) and GM bought it back from him to keep him from making any more warranty claims...

Both of my parents used to be used cars only people. My dad's first new car was a stripped out 1989 Dodge Colt. Mom's was a 1981 F100. Now she drives a Honda van and he has a Ridgeline. They don't consider used cars anymore. Mom buys new ever 3-4, dad still drives them into the ground, unless he needs something bigger.

Dad never was a car guy, in fact I'm not sure he bought a new car in his life. Mom, on the other hand, had both a Corvair Monza Spyder Turbo, and a Buick Wildcat, though I'm not sure which was first.

Unfortunately, they were gone before I was born. I remember back in high school when she told me about them. I was ticked she hadn't held onto them for me. Lol

I believe the first new new car was shortly after I was born My Dad bought a 1971 911T, I don't think it lasted too long as it was expensive for him. He shoudl ahve kept the 356 he had before. ;-) I have no memory of the car but have seen the pictures of me in it. The one I first remember and maybe it was new new was a Fiat Spider, that I road in/on the package shelf until my dad sold it when my sister was born.

First car - 55 Chevy that he traded his go-kart for. It was a rad go-kart and a POS 55 Chevy Biscayne with a dead motor and rusted out floors. Spent the next year rebuilding it.

First (and only) new car - 86 Chevy Astro.
