Both have slip/oil resistant soles, box toe (steel available), comfortable and very long lived. I have a pair of the 2216s that are 10yrs old that I wear in the garage - but if I polish them they are still presentable enough to wear to dinner.

Canada doesn't have a military.
Another vote for Red Wings. Sure, they can be on the expensive side, but they make up for that by lasting a very long time.
If I had $$$, I'd go for either Red Wings Heritage Collection or Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots.

I've thought about trying some Docs. How do they size compared to other shoes? I've found some online cheaper that I can get them locally, so I might try them out, but I'd like them to fit.

They have a UK to US size chart on some of the online shoe sites. I wear an 11-11.5 US and fit in a 10 UK.

As someone who's actually broken in a set of those in basic, I can vouch for them being quite comfy. I did not want to give them back.
I just got myself a set of Docs. Not as work boots, but as dress shoes that I can wear all day without crippling myself. And I have to say, they're comfy. I might be heading towards being a convert. I'd certainly consider them carefully if I were looking for a set of work boots.

here's a thread a little while back on the subject. BOOTS!
I really don't know why you people can't use the search function! JEEZ
really the only relevant part of the thread is this...
jhaas said..."i used to wear timberland pro's but after grabbing a pair of belleville at the fleamarket for $12 im hooked. they are by far the most comfortable boot i have ever worn. i just got a new pair on ebay for $49"
You're in luck, my favorite boots (black Belleville flight boots) are now no longer allowed in uniform, so you can probably pick up a pair surplus.
That said, they're probably pretty E36 M3ty compared to nice civilian boots, but if you can find them cheap...
The puke-green boots we're now forced to wear, however, are total E36 M3.
So I am thinking about getting a set of nicer lace ups like Doc Martens Vintage 1460 or Red Wings Heritage boots.
Anyone have an suggestions for a pair of cheap pull-ons.
Can you get Doc Martens re-soled?
doc martens industrial
my last pair got worn daily for 4 years before i wore them enough to buy another pair. and that was working - i'm a contractor - and in the garage.
Even better, it looks like you can get lifetime ones.

As I posted on at least 2 other what boot threads in the past 3 months, I have a pair of Keen Portlands. They have a composite toe, very comfy, waterproof, and they keep my feet warm here in MN. I really like them, and they are made in the USA. I wouldn't really want to wear them in AL though, at least in the summer.
