I don't know if there's a properly accepted definition for it, but to me they all look like 356s built and modified for street racing rather than in a way the concours folks would appreciate.

Ie low loud and fast - just the sort of car we don't like around here .

Its basically a modified 356 with a bigger engine, better suspension and lots of other non factory bits. Think of them as kind of a hot rod or pro touring 356.

I thought real "356's" brought a lot of money.....$6,000?

The ad sounds like it's in a bit of a state so I do think it's priced about right. Nice 356s tend to go for quite a lot of money but this one is a project with a bunch of parts missing/replaced and some tinworm.

That is cheap these days - even the B models are starting to pull some real money - so even if the battery tray is shot, still has some rust work and flat floors, that looks like a decent price. The cynic in me says an outlaw is a way to get a good price for a 356 that couldn't pass muster in a concours. I'd rather have the outlaw version than the concours.

"....floors are strong enough to stop an IED..." Could he mean IUD?

An outlaw 356 (I'm not sure, but I believe the term could be applied to other cars) it to a "stock" 356, like a '32 street rod would be to a "stock" 1932 Ford.

Aren't you looking for a car?

In reply to alfadriver:

I need that like a hole in the head. Plus there is a 72 Nova local to me with 454 for cheaper if I wanted a project....

Several years ago I had the opportunity to buy a really nice 356 coupe powered by a Super 90 engine. I'm still an idiot for not buying it. (Okay, so at the time I had no chance of affording it.)

Outlaw 356's are what happens when Beetle enthusiasts win the lottery...

Wait -there is a difference between a beetle and a 356?

I thought 356s were just beetles that had been parked out in the sun too long and melted a bit.
