living in Georgia, I seldom carry cold weather survival gear in the winter, but I do usually have gloves and a heavier coat than most people and always have a hat around. But they don't stay in the car, they stay with me.

In the Mustang and the new Mazda, the factory spare, that's the safety net. They're low mileage and reliable, and all my day-to-day driving is suburban in nature.

In the 200k mile Explorer I don't carry much on daily driving, but if we're headed out of town there's a small tool box of assorted wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, mechanix gloves, and a few basic spares (hose clamps, serp belt.) Stashed in the truck compartments there's usually one copy of the Haynes manual, a 12v compressor, spare bulbs and some fluids- oh, and a spare set of plug wires. They're leftovers from buying a set on a camping trip. One wire fell over against a header while dragging the camper to the park at the top of Fort Mountain, GA. Had to diagnose and replace the wire in the campground.

I always have a cell phone and a swiss army knife (tinker, for phillips) in my pocket too.

Two trucks at home.

Wife's truk has jumper cables, oil, coolant, first-aid kit and a drybox full of horse tack.

My truck has tools, jumper cables, oil, coolant, fuses, relays, assorted hitch drawbars with different sized balls, ratchet straps, trailer extension cord (7 pin male goes into the RV socket in the bed and end with 7-6-5-4 pin socket goes out the tailgate so I can haul anything) Emergency magnetic tow lights, electrical repair parts, test light and 30' of towchain with a grab hook on one end and a slip hook on the other.

In winter, I add tire chains and flares to the kit.

Good call. Bigass blanket aint a bad idea either. Wife (5 mos prego at the time) and I got stuck on the hwy in that ice storm a few years ago. After 4 hours I started worrying we'd run outta gas.

Poop you should have called during the ice storm. I would have picked you guys up, or at least brought you a drink!

In my cars I carry a socket set, screw drivers, a good spare, and a jack. The wife's car gets a cell phone.

it depends...... on my streetbikes I generally carry a flashlight and a multitool. In my 89 suburban I carry a ton of stuff....tools, recovery gear, shovel, etc.

I see a lot of interesting and a lot of similar to what I usually carry.

  • I have a bag of basic tools that would help in case of a blowout or if a belt were to come off, etc.

  • A gortex rain coat in case that nonsense happens in the rain.

  • A small first aid kit with some emergency road side stuff as well.

  • A quart of oil (why not?)

  • A massive breaker bar (a pipe w/ grip tape).

  • An extra pair of socks, underwear, basketball shorts, and t-shirt. Any of which can be doubled as a rag or in the case of a really bad emergency cloth to cover wounds or make a stint.

  • Long trips I usually take a knife and a ballistic (you know in case of the zombie apocalypse I have something besides handtools).

  • Oh and like 3 flash lights. One handheld and two elastic banded head mounted ones. Redundant?

The amazing thing is, i have all of this compacted and organized into a nice small blue tupperware tote. Also doubles up as a great raceday kit and seat for said raceday.

So that's where the rest of it went. I also have a flashlight, spare clothes, small shovel, tie down straps. tow rope, and jumper cables.

When I first got married I opened a Christmas gift from my in-laws, what I thought was a small collapsible snow shovel for my car. When I got stuck in the snow coming out of work one night I learned to always open the box, don't just assume it is what it says. Inside the box was a flannel shirt.

At least you could stay warm while dreaming of your collapsible shovel.

Seeing as it is my new civic, all it has is the factory spare tire kit in the trunk. Up front I have a 3 outlet 12v splitter, GPS, iCharger, 3.5mm input cable and my old 8gb nano.

The center console can hold 2 32oz Gatorade bottles on long drives.
