Looking more into this - and more backstory.  Have 20' enclose race trailer thats just at 7K pounds.  I do have a 2006 Hemi grand cherokee thats rated for 7K tow but was the scariest thing to tow the enclosed with (even with load levelers, sway control, trailer brakes, etc) - even when empty.

I'd be open to a 4 door truck but I think we need more cockpit space (four 6' adults, 2 dogs, and 1 exotic bird is the whole family).

And Warren - that is flippin hilarious, whats the turning radius on that?

Due to 2 recent total loss cars, I can spend a little more than I'm comfortable with (thanks full coverage!).  It seems like the 2018+ expeditions came with a "real" HD tow package - 3.73 gears, transfer case with low range, trailer backup gimmick - but thats enough to peak my interest.  That being said its hard to find them, no easy search functions on the usual websites - still looking.

For a multipurpose vehicle a turbo engine is absolutely the way to go versus a big n/a engine. More efficient in normal use, quieter, just nicer. Having towed a 7k lb enclosed trailer with an f150 I'd be hesitant to do it with anything less than that, but for occasional use a large SUV might be okay. The ecoboost cam phasers were supposedly fixed part way through 2020, so if you can spring for a slightly newer model it shouldn't be a concern at all. But a 2018-20 model that's either had the recall done or been verified to have the updated phasers should be fine too.

Searching is a PITA - using cars.com, autotrader, carfax.

Not all line up and searches are all different.  cars.com allow to you flag "HD trailer tow" as a search option but the other 2 do not.  carfax can look up the original window sticker - and thats super important to me but not all trucks are on carfax.

Yeesh - anyway, anyone near Phoenix / Gilbert AZ?

On the Expeditions, the HD tow package came as part of many other packages as well as stand alone. I believe FX4, as well as any of the special option package Limiteds got the HD tow package and better 4x4 system (low range and rear locker.) The Special Edition, Stealth Edition, and Texas Edition are all pretty much the same and come with the HD tow package.

My 2015 has this:

Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package includes Class IV
hitch receiver, 7- and 4-pin connectors, heavy-duty
auxiliary transmission oil cooler, heavy-duty radiator,
electronic brake wiring kit and integrated trailer
brake controller

Pretty comprehensive, though I wouldn't mind having the trailer backup thingy. Kind of disappointed that my wife's Explorer doesn't have it.

The tow package on the gen 4s also have a rear locker & 3.73 gears.  aw hell yah.  It is hard to find though - maybe 1 in 15 have the tow option.  Its not always listed, you have to look at the pictures to see if the transfer case has a low range.   I've seen 2 FX4 trucks - both were at a premium price but XLT trim.  and its weird - there is a fancy trim package that had 22" wheels & I've found a few loaded ones with big wheels, big sunroof, and the tow package.  Seems like a lot of weight to bring the GVWR down.

Anyone here a ford person and can pull oasis reports?

Interesting. My 2015 has 3.73s, and from what I can see they are standard on long-wheelbase 4x4s. Nothing about it being limited slip, though. But I know it is, because when I changed the fluid and didn't put enough friction modifier in, the clutches chattered. I think they might have electronic lockers on the newer ones, I know they are available on new F-150s. I also have a dual-range transfer case, but again, all 4x4s had it in my generation.
