all true. At least with the "days of old" it had to be handed down either word of mouth or in print form so it took time to reach people and a chance to figure out whether its real or fake before it hits. Now, its a 24/7 E36 M3storm, 360*.

Totally unrealted to anything but.. Seol has 2100 nightlclubs? That seems like a bunch.. maybe. I don't know.
A population of almost 10M (9.7) and active us military bases. I'd believe it. LA has 1700 and only 4M in population
edit: nyc claims 25,000
Add the LA Metro area and that number jumps to north of 13 million.
Well, this should be interesting. The hospitals here are starting to open back up for non-Covid-related procedures, and earlier this year I had been scheduled for a relatively common and routine diagnostic one (that frankly I worry more about the prep for than the actual procedure...) and that just happened to have been scheduled for next Wednesday. Got a call earlier this week about a new appointment preceding it and when I called was informed that the appointment was to have a Covid test done. A rather smart precaution IMO since obviously they don't want the staff and other patients exposed. Am kind of curious to see whether they're doing just a swab test or if they'll be drawing blood as well for an antibodies test... if I were a hospital doing it I'd want to be doing both tracking purposes, but I imagine they're only really concerned with people who actively have it and can be contagious. We'll find out on Monday (yes, they are apparently still doing the tests on Memorial day...).
I was reading in the "media" how some "experts" (!) are supposedly concerned that this will run into the next flu season and things will be bad (argh).
Anyway, I highly suspect the next flu season will be wildly smaller then previous ones. Why? Well, most all of these things originate from Asia and there is essentially zero travel happening now. Also, with all the precautions (in most places) we have going currently should put a huge hit in any transmission.
I am very hopeful there will be some lasting memory of what we have been doing as a way to help stop the common flu in the future.
My wife and I and half the kids had mild versions of Covid symptoms in the month after this all started, nothing worth seeing a doctor about. Wife's work decided that people could get an antibody test on their dime so she did. Negative. Lots and lots of people saying "I probably had it" and being very laid back about being exposed. We'll keep keeping our distance.

My mother is in a nursing home. She will be getting tested by state order soon.
Her home has been free of the virus so far, but another nursing home I almost put her in had 5 deaths already.
Luck of the draw.
Dr Fauci was on NPR this morning and said he had "cautious optimism" that a vaccine may be possible by December 2020/ January 2021.
That would be amazing if they could get something by that time , fingers crossed ,
still need to give it to 330 million people , minus the anti-vaxxers !

I have followed pharma companies for my entire life, thanks to my dad. We are seeing a response from them like we have never seen before.
Here is a a quote from the Pfizer CFO:
“Think in different terms,” Bourla told them. “Think you have an open checkbook, you don’t need to worry about such things. Think that we will do things in parallel, not sequential. Think you need to build manufacturing of a vaccine before you know what’s working. If it doesn’t, let me worry about it and we will write it off and throw it out.”
They’re counting their chickens before they hatch. Taking a moon shot. Companies like Abbott and Pfizer and Gilead do not take moon shots. They buy small companies that take moon shots and are proven to be successful, but they do not do it themselves. This is a good thing for the war against this pandemic.

Oh no anti-vaxxers! I'd kind of forgotten about those... people.
In reply to mtn (Forum Supporter) :
I can confirm C19 vaccine manufacturing construction is currently underway. On multiple fronts. And that is just in my little part of the pharma world.
Oh... and I disagree on your last point. Large companies like those absolutely take moon shots. I've been involved with those shots when they work and when they don't.

Far more prevalent than you believe. My mom was an elementary school nurse for the last 20 years of her career. I remember her on the phone with a parent (not the real names): “Karen, I see you in church every Sunday. Catholics cannot claim religious exemption. Go get the vaccines”

Eh... probably different definitions of moon shots.

$1B a reasonable definition?

The one plus on this Virus is it i worldwide and so all the Pharma companies are interested in finding a working vacinne, I doubt 10% cared about Ebola ,
but we still come back to numbers , 330 million in the USA , Billions worldwide and I am going to assume the vaccine has to be kept cool like the flu vacinne ,
Fingers crossed , i would really like to travel to Europe but only with a vaccine
Stay safe

Oh yes... a small tidbit of info that someone remembered a few days ago. And not just "cool" but berking cold.
One would think it should come as no surprise that -80 freezers use a little bit of power. But the power part apparently gets ignored until the end. Happens every. Berking. Time.
In reply to Ian F (Forum Supporter) :
There are some pretty decent vapor absorption cycle refrigeration ideas out there for keeping medicine cool. Not as efficient as vapor compression, but it is pretty easy to make a fire pretty much anywhere and they are relatively cheap to build.

I know Stirling Ultracold is an option for scientific -80 freezers that don't use compressors. They aren't cheap, but they use 70% less power.

In my experience, pharma doesn't care much about electrical efficiency. Especially for the validated systems.

Depends. All that I can say is my dad pitched Miles White an opportunity, and was told “this is a moon shot. Abbott doesn’t take moon shots.”
But you’re right, a huge part of why healthcare is so expensive is that for every drug or biosimilar that makes it to market, there are a hundred (thousand?) that went through all of the R&D and clinical trials only to be cancelled.

Perhaps not as much directly, but the CDC has been used to reinforce just about every stupid idea that comes down the pike, as if claiming the CDC says it adds a level of authority.
Ive heard hundreds of statements that include things like "Do it in accordance with CDC requirements" for things that the CDC was NOT recommending (and they have no authority to "require".
Businesses, newscasters, average people, political leaders... it's a constant drone of inaccurate information pretending to have some sort of authority.
This. And heaven forbid you question it. Holy hell.
I think I stated this 100 pages back.
My biggest issue is there is never a reasoned response. No, hey guys we need to keep an eye on this. No calm discussion. The media and government always starts out screaming THE WORLD IS GOING TO DIE!!!!
Anyone with a lick of common sense knows they are full of E36 M3 and exaggerating the danger of the situation for ratings and air time. The rest of the world panics and we run out of toilet paper, milk and bread.
Then, when nothing happens the media and government pat themselves on the back and congratulate themselves on a job well done, even though they are the ones who created the panic to start with.
We don't have a news cycle anymore. We have a bullE36 M3 cycle. I'm just sad that so many people fall for it.
Of course. Generating panic keeps eyeballs on news programs and websites, generating ad revenue - which is the ONLY thing that matters to news organizations.
We also had this discussion some 100 pages ago - modern news has nothing to do with informing the public anymore.
Sad about it? Maybe... but I've come to expect it, such is my lack of faith in humanity as a whole and Americans in particular.
Sit back and watch the poo-show...
And yet, I have been attacked, insulted and sworn at for saying these same things, and asking people to relax a bit and think...

A lot less "first with the late breaking news" and a lot more "verifying sources, data and information" is what we need. We aren't going to get it because that doesn't drive revenue or clicks or views.
The media is, at this point, becoming less of the issue than the people watching it. When people start burning churches to stop people from congregating, school board members threatening to shoot people that get within 6' etc.... that's dangerous and stupid. There's no tolerance left in our society. Trying to not flounder here, but this "us vs them" E36 M3 has to stop. The world has lots of grey and colors in it, not black and white.
As I've always believed, you do you, I do me. We leave each other alone. Don't threaten me, don't tell me how I'm going to live my life and I'm going to let you live yours.
It wouldn't let me thumbs up this so, Thumbs up.
Lets see if we get a lot of Hotspots around the country after this long weekend , come back in a week or 2 !
People seem to think this is over , that the 6ft and facemask rules are history .....
Stay safe guys, the curve is flat now most places , lets keep the 2nd wave far in the future......
