I have tile throughout my house. I hate it. It was done by the previous owners who were Hispanic and they generally don't like carpet.

Its freezing cold to walk on in the winter and shows even the smallest bit of dirt. I walk around my house in slippers all of the time. Its also hard (duh) which means anything you drop onto it will break, like your cell phone for instance. It also causes sound to travel like crazy which isn't a big deal when you live by yourself like I do, but if someone is doing something on the other side of the house you're going to hear it.

Lastly it takes forever to clean. Sweeping, moping, and waiting for it to dry takes about three times longer then just running a vacuum over carpet.

If I ever have the money I'll seriously consider putting carpet over the tile in the bedrooms at the very least.

In places like the kitchen, dining room, ect hardwood or tile is the way to go but for the bedrooms and living room, stairs and such we will always have carpet.

I spend mostof my timein the house in socks and the carpet is much easier on the feet. Also with small children I think it has saved us a few trips to the Doc.

I am renting a condo with white carpet (which is the worst color for carpet) I've been here for 3 years and the building is 5 years old. The high traffic areas have turned to a gray and will not get any whiter. Also, I had a senior dog that sometimes couldn't hold her bladder and even cleaning up the spots immediately wouldn't keep the carpet from being stained.

I've been quoted by a carpet cleaning company that to do my living room, dining room and hallway would be about $150. I'm gonna see how that works out.

My parent's place has 200-year-old hardwood floors. They look awesome and aren't hard to keep looking good. Spot vacuum dust bunnies and settle into your chair with a leather bound book.

Really?

I hope you meant to say that the one particular family didn't like carpet and you were not trying to generalize the flooring preferences of all 50 million Americans who identify themselves as hispanic based on your sample size of 1.

Keep in mind that with carpet while you might not see all that gross stuff, it's still there, only hiding.

I pulled up all the carpet in my house when we bought it - if you have any kind of allergies, it just adds to the misery. I don't find the wood floors cold at all (unless the @#$% furnace isn't working...). Spills and cat barf are easy to clean up, but yeah, you can't get away without vacuuming or at least a swipe with the dust mop regularly, since every wee dust mote shows.

In reply to T.J.:

That's why I said "generally". I'm sure some Hispanics do like carpet but I have yet to meet one and I live in an area where they comprise 50% (if not more) of the population.

I asked several of my Hispanic friends why and they all said the same thing. Carpet is dirty.

If I can't see it then it doesn't bother me

I don't have any pets or alergies but if I did I could see why carpet wouldn't be ideal.

I grew up on hardwood floors and hate them to this day. Too easliy scratched, cold, and noisy. Fresh, soft carpet is going down soon in my place. Yes, I will roll around on it as soon as I can. No pets or kids helps it out a lot.

When I've been to homes of many Aisan and European people (sometimes here, sometimes in the actual country), shoes were never worn in the house. You take them off at the door. That would help keep floors a lot cleaner.

None of the Mexican houses in The Three Amigos had carpet. That is close to the extent of my expertise on the subject.

I never thought of that, but it would look nice. But what if you have a basement?

Do radiant floor heating and polished concrete. We are doing that in a building that I am the project manager for right now.

I have radiant floor heat in my shop and it is awesome! I probably will never build a house again, but if I do that's what it's getting. No drafts, no air movement, less dust flying around, the floor is warm in the winter, and no temperature swings. And its also very efficient . I highly recommend it.

I want something that I can install once and refinish for life. At this point, I'm not sure how long we're staying in this house, but since my parents are remodeling it anyway, I get to pick the flooring material.

I love the wood floors in 100+ year old houses that you can sand and refinish whenever they look bad. They look good and clean easily.

I really do not want tile in the livingroom or in the bedrooms. We are installing tile in the bathrooms and kitchen, though. We've done tile many times, but this installing wood on a slab is stumping us. We really don't think glue is the best option, but it might be the best solution.

I just laid 320 sqft of bamboo today. $1.99/sqft at HD for the solid stuff. Actually looks great. Regardless of whether you go wood or not, get an iRobot roomba. I know they seem gimmicky, but fire that badboy up right before you leave for work every day and your vacuuming is complete. It works miracles. I'd use it regardless of whether I changed to hardwood- works equally well on hardwood and carpet, and you'll never believe there was that much crap on your floors (under couches, beds, tables, etc too).

you can glue down engineered hardwood on a slab. laminate sucks so hard, do not even consider the crap. it makes the whole house look and feel like you cheaped out on everything
