I don't get it; all of my friends and relatives computers running Vista with IE7 seem fine. But whenever I have the flash or java add-ons running, IE7 slows to a crawl. I lived with this for 6 months, then finally disabled them today. IE7 runs like a champ now (but I can't see any flash or java on internet sites). Is there anyway to actually fix it rather then bandaid it? And don't suggest firefox (first post is going to suggest firefox anyways, I KNOW) 
its cause your using IE7. but you already know that

The best thing anyone can say about IE7 is that it sucks slightly less than IE6 (or IE8, as far as I can tell).
These days, sticking with IE if you don't have to is just silly. You've never had so many GOOD browsers to choose from. You get more features, better performance, and pages look better (if they were built properly).
Don't like Firefox? Try Chrome, or Safari, or Opera. All four are MILES ahead of IE. And they're all free, so it doesn't cost you anything. Don't like 'one, just uninstall it and try another one.

I was a long time hold out on IE. I switched to FF about 6 months ago. It took some getting used to, but I do now like it better. Every once in a while I still have to use IE for specific sites and now I don't like it as much.
If it makes you feel any better, IE7 hates everyone.

...and there's a great Firefox plugin called IETab that opens Exploder-compatible tabs inside Firefox, so you never have to leave the comfort and safety of home.
I just moved to IE8, hated FF when I tried it a few years ago. Can't understand why IE8 has the second tab open all the time, and that is only any use for Live Search, because when you change/refresh the first tab, the second tab reverts to Live Search mode!
I might try Safari or Chrome today.

nuther, you should give FF another whirl. It's quite a bit faster than it was a few years ago, and has quite a few more features. Plus, a few years ago there were still a lot of poorly made "IE only" sites. You don't see that much anymore.
Safari and Chrome are both very, very nice, too. Both use the Webkit rendering engine, which is probably the fastest and best rendering engine out there.
I had high hopes for IE8, thinking MS would build on the gains they had made with IE7. Instead, it appears to be a step backward. Slow, clunky, and it does some really weird things to sites.

test post, because first attempt gave a 502 bad gateway, hmm. My old bookmarks are still there, which is a surprise considering the uninstall. Typing seems a lot smoother, less hesitant, which is a plus. Will have to update the bookmarks now.
I got the bad gateway message as well so it's not a FF thing, but only for one attempt to connect. I just figured it was a glitch in the WWW
502 was my fault. I was restarting the server. Sorry 'bout that.
Yeah, the uninstall won't remove personal user settings. The last time you setup FF, it imported your bookmarks from IE.
I would suggest, for security purposes, to install the following add-ons for FF.
WOT or Web of Trust
NoScript
FlashBlock
AdBlockPlus.
Once you get it tweaked and tuned a bit, for NoScript, I find that setting it to default with root domain scripts running allows me to browse most sites without too much hassle and still stay relatively protected. Plus it can allow scripts based on your bookmarks and as you use it, and enable/diable more scripts it will get better.
The plus side, disabling the JavaScript can speed up the browsing.
There are some other neat extensions for FF. I like the WeatherBug add-on, along with FoxMarks (which sincs your bookmarks between IE7, FF and other computers) some of the Google and GMail add-ons. Just don't get too crazy with them and you'll have a decent browser that loads pretty quick and works fairly well.

I heard that google was no longer going to support Chrome or something along those lines? I still use it on both my desktop and laptop, but just curious about that...anyone know?
I was a long time user of Firefox but it kept on freezing on me, constantly, but recently put the new on on my desktop for school website because my.ucf.edu doesn't like chrome. Seems to works somewhat better, well, way better than IE.
Not true. They're actually coming out with 2.0 shortly, as well as a Mac version. Chrome is pretty key to Google's plan for world domination through web apps. And I think they just like poking Microsoft with a stick. http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/01/google-chrome-20-pre-beta.html
By the way, the current beta versions of Safari (4.0) and Firefox (3.1) are very good. As a web geek, I'm pretty stoked about their advanced CSS support. They make it very easy to do some really cool stuff IE users will just miss out on.
And Firefox has an auto spell check feature FTW...I havent mispellld neerly as mutch werds as I usd too

All of 'em have spell check now, except IE. Safari will let you resize text boxes, too. That's pretty cool.
fmi, I don't know what you're using now, but Chrome will show this site better than anything other than Safari and the Firefox betas.
