This isn't really about stealerships so much as it is about the engineering and parts prices of motorcycles....particularly BMWs.
Besides, parts "might" be cheaper if cycles sold in the numbers that cars sell in. How many R100rts do you think were sold in the U.S. last year? In the world?
Be glad it wasn't a Hardly. Not only would the parts be expensive, but it would shake itself apart right after you put it together.
I find it kind of funny, i work at a Mopar/GMC dealer and i was doing a axle seal on a youkon XL and i did not realise they charged $34 per qt for 75-90 syn. and with 3qts that go in it, kinda makes you think....
I managed the parts and accessories department of a BMW motorcycle dealer once, and in fact owned a few air cooled boxers long ago. Anyway...

"Many oil filters cross reference to the bazillion dollar BMW units:
Oil Filter: There was a lot of discussion on this ca '95-'96, with the engineering specs for the FRAM coming out as good or better than the BMW filter. Someone else pointed out that BMW does not manufacture their filters, but outsources.
Per Joe Senner:
AMSOIL: ASF-57 AC DELCO: PF-53 FRAM: PH-3614, PH6063 Hastings: 157A, LF157 Motorcraft: FL-271, FL-793 Purolator: FCO-201, PER-241 Wix: 51348, 51785"
The most extortionate oil change I've ever had in my KTM 690 SMC - 2 different oil filters plus 4 screens to clean, and 2 liters of Motorex Power Synt 10-60 at $17/quart. my M3 gets $60 worth of Redline 10W40+ a BMW paper element.
When I'm caning either vehicle mercilessly and the engine doesn't grenade, however, it's worth it.
From yesterday...2010 Corolla a/c condenser $834. The aftermarket has these all day long for $300 or less.
Neon quarter panel is around $800. That will total most Neons by itself. Used ones are $150-$175. I don't know what these manufacturers are thinking. I'd rather sell a hundred and make $50 each than sell zero and make nothing.
Sometimes it is just silly!
Almost started a war when a girlfriends car needed a waterpump. Part of the procedure was to inspect and replace the timing belt if nessessary. Belt comes off in order to remove the pump. Their argument was that since I had specified that they were to replace the belt the price would reflect it as a separate procedure.
$320 price difference!

And sometimes it's not. I found a broken gas tank strap on my Tahoe a month back. Went to the local dealership and the parts were about $25 a piece but they were Canada and the parts guy couldn't give me a time on when they'd get here. I checked every parts store and junk yard in the area and no one could get them for this truck. I checked with LMC Truck and they had them. I ordered from them and their price was within $2 of the dealership prices. The straps showed up a week later with GM part numbers on them and "made in Canada" right below the label.
Reminds me of trying to source a Miata front chin spoiler from the R models. Couldn't find it anywhere in Canada, and finally ordered one from a US dealer. When it arrived -- you guessed it -- it included a "Made in Canada" sticker. D'oh.
The hvac fan wasn't working on one of my escorts, I called the junkyard and asked how much for the fan relay or whatever it's called and the said "$25". So then I called the ford dealer. "18.99". "I'll be right there".

My Duc chewed through the switch for the brake lights, two under warranty and then $60/each after that. Getting tired after doing this twice on my dime, I reasoned that Ducati doesn't make switches they purchase them from somewhere else. I took that switch into Radio Shack, they looked it up in the book and had two available; one was $1.99, the other was $2.49. I splurged on the $2.49 switch, and have never replaced it since. Sure I had to put the pigtail on myself and its not OEM, but then its not OEM quality either ;-).
a friend of mine was having trouble with her escort, it didn't want to go into gear sometimes, other times it was fine. if you pump it a few times usually its fine. sounds to me like slave cylinder, no?
she took it to the ford dealer before i could take a look at it and they changed the clutch, then said "oh, its still doing it, maybe we should change the slave cylinder" then fixed the real problem. so they ignored the $50 fix and went straight to the $700 fix they knew wouldn't work.
similar to my recent nissan dealer experience...

I did an oil change on a neighbor's Duke II a couple years back, only because I wanted to ride it to see if I want one. (I do.) But that oil change had me seriously reconsidering KTM ownership. It's like the engineers were all done, standing around admiring their work, and one guy said, "...uh, guys...I hate to be the guy to piss in the punch bowl, but...did we forget about the oil...?"
