I've finally watched enough youtube videos to feel comfortable taping/mudding the drywall seams on the drywall I hung in our bathroom. When I was inspecting them today I noticed....the cracks are hairy? Is this normal for the drywall or do I have some sort of mildew/mold issue going on here?
The drywall itself is often reinforced with little (I assume) fiberglass fibers. When you cut and break it you expose them.
Normal, but GREAT thread title.
The corner bead will cover it
Back in the day, they used to add horse hair to plaster to increase the strength. Primitive composites ftw!

Yep horse hair plaster over concrete over lathe board. Gotta love the thread title.
Shave it. It makes clean up easier.

I'm thinking this too. Mud that crack and keep the hair in.

Thanks folks. I took a look at the leftover pieces in my garage and they too have hairy cracks so i figured it was something in the sheet rock. Oh and this will be covered by door trim. So my back door will be covered and I wont have to worry about a muddy crack.

So, you will have a trimmed, muddy, hairy crack?

Since it will be trimmed, I fail to see why it needs to be muddy. Granted, my crack may leak a little every once and a while but its getting old (made in 1980) so that's to be expected.
