What a teaser of a title, but for transport purposes, not insane engine transplant.
I don't feel like borrowing Pop's car to pull our trailer, and my truck has been in many pieces for quite some time. So, just throwing this silly question out there.

I'm so depressed right now
probably... just make sure you tie it down- you don't want 600 pounds of cast iron flying into you during a panic stop...
I think it should without a carb on it.
Hell, I fit a Dusenberg straight 8 in the back of a Tahoe.
Wait that isn't the same thing.

I fit an SBC in the back of a Smart car. If you can't fit one in your WRX I will has a sad.

But, can you make it power the smart car and have hilarious wheelies ?

I put a V6 KLZE with an extra set of heads in the back of my mazda 323. Made sure I centered it so all the weight wasn't on the rear struts.

My first thought was "Probably, with box flares and an FWD automatic transmission from one of the big GMs..."

What the hell were you doing with a Dusenberg engine?

We had a fully rebuilt Dusenberg engine just sitting around with nothing for it to go into, so we sold it.
I had to transport it from Chicago to Philadelphia. We had to borrow a 2001 Tahoe and build a cradle for it to sit on so it can ride in the back. Very close clearance.
Much to my surprise the recipient had a car collection of many different vintage race cars. There was two GT40s and a 917. There were a ton of other priceless cars I don't remember, I was just the delivery boy, I didn't get the nickel tour.
I'd be surprised if someone who needed a Dusey engine didn't have an interesting collection.

That was a bare block right? I had trouble fitting a fully dressed Buick v6 in the back of my suburban because it was on a cradle screwed into a pallet, so I took the carb off and all of it slid right in. What I'm getting at is it really depends on the configuration of the engine/packaging.

Correct but I had plenty of space left for a full dressed motor if I needed it. I had done all my measuring before going to pick it up based on a fully dressed block.
I wan to say I've seen pictures of a dodge LA 318 w/heads being hauled in the back of a mid 90s civic hatch, so probably.
Yeah, it fit. We pulled the heads off - wanted to visually inspect around the steam holes - but it would have fit just fine with them on.
A completely disassembled Pontiac 400 fresh from the machine shop will fit in the trunk of a WRX Sedan. I bet a wagon could fit a few engines in the back.
this is what it looks like when you break an aluminum 5.3 down so that 2 guys can lift it into the trunk of a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix:
i'd hope that a station wagon of any flavor would have at least this much room..
it would have easily slid in and out fully assembled, but we didn't feel like trying to lift and then gently set 400 pounds of engine into the car. for the sake of full disclosure: i took the spare tire and jack out and put them in the back seat... the back end of the car only dropped maybe an inch with the trunk full of LS engine goodness..
Sweet, Derrik!
For the record, I've put a Honda Dream in the back of my Olds Delta 88. It was in pieces, too.
