So I'm looking to pick up a lever action .22 to do most of my shooting with. Because lever guns are fun, and .22 is dirt freaking cheap. I've heard nothing but good things about the Henry .22. Fun, accurate, reliable. But it is a little pricey. The best I've found is $279 from a local hunting and fishing store. Ordering it online I would just break even.
However the same shop has a Winchester Model 150. Which they would let go for the princely sum of $120. What can you guys tell me about these two makes and models?
I wish I had an answer for you, But I have been on the same search, .22 lever repeater. Be glad your not holding out for an Ithaca...
A Winchester for $120 and you don't have it?
I'll tell you though, what I would really like to see is a 22 LR, straight wrist ("old tyme style") with a loading gate. I've never seen one.
I'd get the Winchester. I've been looking for a 94/.22 for a long time. You'll be able to find Henry's anywhere, and for a long time.
And Neon, if you're looking for an Ithica, keep your open for a Ted Williams; made by Ithica, sold at Sears. My Ted Williams is actually nicer than my Ithica.
Not to threadjack, but along a similar line, I'm looking for a nice bolt action 22LR. I've got a couple of Mausers (1 8mm surplus and 1 22-250 sporter), but I want something cheaper to plink and practice with without the annoyance of collecting brass for reloading. Thoughts? I like the feel of the CZ American, but they're pricey.

Amen.
Even though I'm a sucker for exposed-hammer .22 pump rifles myself.
For bolt actions, the older Remingtons are nice. There's also some east Europe trainers that were coming in a couple years ago that they say shoot well, and they were selling for under a bill. I haven't really heard of a bolt action 22 that sucked.
Even reloaded ammo these days is very expensive. Cast pistol boolits are a dime each, $25/lb for powder, etc. 22 is about all one can afford.

In reply to Brotus7:
i have a savage that is basically a copy of the old marlin .22 bolt action. it came with a junk BSA 4x15 scope from walmart for $99. i have since replaced the scope with a 4x30 "22 special" that collects light much better and is easier to shoot with.
i'm planning on picking up a 10/22 in the next couple months for more plinking fun. 189 at academy around the corner
Buy the winchester. Marlin lever .22 is also a great gun
For the lever gun buy the Winchester and have fun.
For the bolt gun pickup either a Marlin (older models can be had for cheap) or a Savage. I'm actually currently trying to decide between the heavy barrel thumb hole stock Savage in either .22 mag or .17 HMR.
This is what I'm currently looking at, same thing is available in .22 lr.
This is a good 22 bolt gun:

if a bit different. It's a Cooey, made on Canada. 22 bolt guns just seem to go for a premium.
Those Marlins sure look nice, but pricey.
Well I sort of solved my own problem by instead ordering a pistol. Rock Island Armory Compact 1911. But I had to promise the wife no spending for awhile. Oh well, there's always another rifle out there.

For a bolt action, get the Savage MKII. For a lever, get a Marlin 39a.

We had one of those. It was little finicky about what ammo you used, but we were very economy minded and used the cheapest E36 M3 we could find. We were in high school at the time. My brother still has the rifle and I have the Model 61 Winchester pump. It looks like the one above with the exposed hammer, only the hammer on mine isn't exposed. Both was very accurate.
If you want to save even more money on a bolt action, try a Mossberg.

FYI Recent Marlins have terrible quality control. They are in the process of closing their CT plant and have laid off ~250 employees. As a result their new guns have had all kinds of problems. My friend bought a 39A before finding this out. It broke 2x in under 1000 rounds. Their older stuff is quality, just watch out.
I bought a Savage semi auto 22lr recently. $130 at the Wal-Mart. Shoots great, feeds perfectly. My friends have nice 22's with bull barrels, beautifully stained stocks, scopes and bipods. They shoot great, too, but for for $300+ other options start openning up, too, like a nice starter .17 HMR.
Some of my firends have a few really nice guns. I do too, but I love the value end of the spectrum more than some. I picked up a Sears private label Winchester 30-30 lever for $175 at a pawn shop, refinished the stock, and it rocks and looks good, with a little patina on the metal. Love it, always hunting for deals like that.
