I have always thought highly of Ray Allen, even more so now.

Ray Allen said: When the Skoczylas family was risking their own lives to hide people they barely knew, they weren’t doing it because they practiced the same religion or were the same race. They did it because they were decent, courageous human beings. They were the same as those people crouched in a hole. And they knew that those people didn’t deserve what was being done to them. I asked myself a really tough question: Would I have done the same? Really, would I have done the same?

Why I went to Auschwitz

I like to think I would do the same, but the truth is I don't know what I would do until I had to do it. I pray I never have to make that choice and to make the right one if I do.

Man, I like the way that guy (Ray Allen) thinks. It's not about me or my people, it's about us. Such a mature way of thinking.

And if you ever make it to DC, do go to the Holocaust Museum. I went several years ago with some friends from out-of-town, and it was a jarring experience. I had no idea how bad the Holocaust really was before then.

In a heartbeat. I think I could find the courage to stand for those who cannot. Even if I stand alone.

It was one of the worst things imaginable. When GIs finally made it to the camps they were hardened combat troops and many of them have told me that their memories of the camps were the thing that they still have nightmares about.

I will always stand for those who can't and hope that I choose the correct side.

I have been to Dachau. It is something you never forget. It changed me. I can not explain it. It was a humbling experience that will change you.

Thing is, you can never know for sure unless you are in that spot.

In reply to KyAllroad:

My father's uncle wasn't in the first wave to get to a camp but arrived shortly after. He was never quite right since.

I'd like to think I'd do the right thing in a situation like that but I guess you can never be sure.
