so ... you don't eat any of the larger fish ? Tuna, King Mackerel, shark ...???

maybe not all of the fish, but seems like most of them eat other fish ....

and yes you are correct ... the larger fish.. the ones that live a long time do accumulate mercury to a higher degree than the smaller ones

I'm a horse owner and have no problem with it – providing that the slaughtering is humane. There are too many neglected, starving animals out there that die long slow deaths. Horses are really expensive to keep, sometimes the kindest thing is a quick, humane death.

As far as I care, meat comes from the store in a nice package. Otherwise, I don't know.

There was a time when the idea of eating calf's liver turned me off. Then one night I was super starved and that was all the chow hall had on the menu. (I was in the Navy stationed in Iceland, at the time). I also thought I'd never eat raw fish/sushi....when I finally tried it I really liked it.

My father grew up on a farm and eats all the organ "meats" from deer, cows, chickens, but absolutely will NOT eat catfish.

Would I eat horse meat? Maybe, if I hadn't met the horse beforehand, and it was reasonably tender. One gripe I've heard about horse is that it can be "stringy"...I guess because horses have less fat on them than cows.

I wouldn't. I grew up with horses, have owned horses, and my mom still has them. I just can't fathom the idea of eating horse meat

I have known about slaughtering horses for years and have known that it is eaten in other countries, but I just keep it locked away deep in the back of my brain. When everyone stops talking about it, I will forget about it again.

Also the sale of Horse meat is illegal in many states.

I think most people have problems with the idea of eating horses because generally horses haven't been raised as livestock in America. They're treated as pets.

All I would have to do is drive down to Hialeah. Bunch of illegal slaughter houses, you just have to say "Jose sent me." They bust them a few times a month, but cannot stop the business. Just don't worry about cleanliness.

A horse walks in to a bar.
Bartender says: "Why the long face?"
Horse says: "My family were slaughtered for their meat".

Hey, it's not as funny as Horse says: "I got the Cancer" but it is topical. Thank you folks... I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip the waitresses.

Are we sure there's about to be a flood of Filet of Horse at the Wal Mart soon? From reading articles elsewhere it seems this is primarily aimed at curbing the practice of just dumping Old Mr Ed out in the wild.

more on horse meat

"As a rash of horse killings plague South Florida, the odds of you unknowingly ingesting horse meat increases.

But that’s only if you purchase meat from an unlicensed meat vendor, such as from somebody selling meat from the back of their vehicle – which is not the most uncommon thing to do in Miami."

People really buy meat out of the back of somebody's Tercel in Miami?

Or a farmers market. The meat is always pretty good too.

Generally, no. I do eat some tuna. But enough studies have shown that Dolphin tend to be higher than normal on mercury. There was a good documentary about dolphins, and ignoring the inflamatory emotional part, the mercury info was pretty alarming. Worse was dolphin (with mercury) being passed off as whale (no mercury).

Anyway, the higher the animal on the food chain, the less I'll eat it, since the taste changes. I don't want bear, but deer is fine. Just a personal taste thing.

I've always wanted to try it. There is a restaurant about an hour away from me that serves turtle, but unfortunately it is across the street from the best fried chicken in the world, so I've never even given thought to going there. I might now.

I had a co worker from Bosnia. One day he brought in a big bag of home made jerky and no one would try it but me. It didn't taste bad but he wouldn't tell me what it was in english and his creepy laugh made me hope deep down inside that the worse thing it could be was horse.
