So I took the time to watch the Yacht Rock series. I did find them to be an odd, funny look at the era. I think the story they present is likely much better than reality.
I had never heard of this as called Yacht Rock.
I admit, I do often listen to a Steely Dan channel on Pandora
What really struck a cord for me was...
In Yacht Rock #1 at the 3:45 minute mark, the characters are at Burton Chace Park overlooking the boats at Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club.
Though not shown in the film, my friend Kim Stuart kept her Schock 35 sailboat, VooDoo Doll, at that very dock in about '07/'08. I think she was 5th from the end. I had sailed from that very spot on a couple of occasions.
I was never a big Steely Dan fan until about 5 or 6 years ago. In that time I've bought 3 or 4 albums from the used record store. Great, great band.
I've got an obscure and not so obscure 70s section in my CD rack. It's got some Ramones, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Hawkwind, America, Charlie Daniels Band, Earth Wind & Fire, Queen, Cars, B52s, Dickies, Agent Orange, Rush...
As far as hearing obscure on the radio: Beach Boys "Heroes and Villains"
Later stuff, seems obvious that Brian was all messed up on something.
I just heard "shut the berkeley up" by cake.
Takes a good dj to bleep that one out...

My understanding is that Brian Wilson's dad messed him up more than drugs ever could.

It's beyond funny. It is a BRILLIANT satire of that period.
A little while back, I heard a song on XM's Lithium about a cat aggravating its owner, it was freakin' hilarious. Think 'Simon's Cat' with an alt rock beat. I did not have a chance to catch the name of the song or the band, though. Anyone have any ideas?
Heard Convoy not that long ago. Son was appalled by it.
Then again, maybe I'd looked it up on Youtube, to torture him with.
When I was like 5-6 years old I had a couple of records with truck songs. I would put on Convoy and line up all my toy trucks around my room and smash police cars with them.

That's it!!! 'Kitty scratched me through my jeans... berkeley YOU KITTY YOU'RE GOING OUTSIDE TONIGHT!' Thanks!

I wish I could use that talent to save the world or something.
I have a photographic memory when it comes to music. Helped me get a part-time gig teaching it.
A couple weeks back, I heard "The Four F Club" by The Mentors on the radio. A song so foul that I think a link to it may be a TOS violation here.
The DJ did a great job of manually censring it, only missed one f-bomb. Given the sheer volume of bleeps she had to do, that is quite impressive.
I have finally found an oldies station that doesn't think 1980 is actually old...

I don't receive the station around my home, but just a bit north it comes in fine. Been a long time since I heard most of their 1950s/60s/70s playlist.

a good cover that you'll never hear on the radio...
i hear a lot of the songs that have been mentioned in this thread on a weekly basis... but i also get to listen to KQRS a lot of the time..
If you like Paper Lace you'll love the Bay City Rollers.
I was a teenager in England when they were popular. Couldn't stand that stuff. Zep!!
I accidentally caught "death proof" and was spellbound by how bad and good it was. 'Specially the soundtrack. down in mexico
Sexy ass song. And if you get the youtube from the movie… just don't blame me.
