The number of social media influencers has exploded so it's not surprising to see them in the headlines. If any of them had passed away 10 years ago it would have made local news at best. These guys are pretty much the Hollywood stars of their generation.
I really liked his channel, but honestly it was a matter of time. Some of the stuff he did and promoted was downright dangerous and going to hurt someone, like the plaster of Paris foundry, or the awesome giant mirror melter thing from an old rear projection tv. Still he was one of the few YouTubers I could tolerate.

I'm still looking for a one of those TVs so I can grab the Fresnel lens out of it.
