This has been a great car. I can't imagine having a car that is more precise, balanced, predictable, and fun through the twisties. I'm really on the fence about selling it, but I just don't have time to take it out much anymore and I don't want it to sit until it turns into garbage like most of the track cars I see on CL around here. It does look better in the pictures - paint has a fair number of dings and scratches, but polishes up nice and looks great from a short distance. Ready to track.
Asking $5500. Located in Atlanta, GA.
Here are the details copied from the ad:
I'm looking to sell my Mariner Blue 1990 Mazda Miata (MX-5) track car and occasional daily driver. Asking $5500. It's been a fantastic car - lots of fun, and needs nothing, but I don't have time to take it out to the track much anymore. 5 speed manual transmission. Original paint and body panels, as far as I can tell (except rear trim, which was replaced with another factory Mariner Blue piece). Numbers matching engine (or oil pan, at least). Very lightweight car, was 2085 lbs last time I had it on the scales and it's lighter now. Lots of nice upgrades, here are some of the highlights:
- Lightweight (12 lbs) composite hardtop with lexan rear window
- Adjustable Koni sport shocks
- Coilover sleeves with higher-rate springs, corner-weights set to within 5 lbs
- Custom-made tig welded chromoly roll bar (track legal)
- Rebuilt big brake kit from later (1.8L) cars
- Torsen LSD with quicker ratio final drive
- Momo composite racing seats (FIA rated)
- Schroth 6-point harnesses (FIA rated)
- Quick release hub and steering wheel
- Real carbon-kevlar center console
- Upgraded motor mounts
- De-powered steering rack with bump steer adjusters
- RX-8 fuel pump
- Hollow 7-spoke Miata wheels
- Radiator cowl plate
- Performance alignment from GTE (maximum camber, zero toe)
The chassis has high miles (around 260k), but has been very well maintained. The engine was gone through by the previous owner and it runs great and has very good compression numbers (I checked it again few weeks ago). Engine temp never above normal range, even during hot track days. The brakes and suspension were recently refreshed with rebuilt calipers, new brake pads, ATE high-temp brake fluid, new ball-joints, tie rod ends, rack bellows, etc. Trans has new Redline MT-90 oil and differential has new Royal Purple oil. Tires have lots of tread (only have ~5k miles on them).
For those familiar with the 1.6L engine, I have inspected the crankshaft nose and replaced the woodruff key and pulley, while I was in there as a precaution. Everything was in great shape. Water pump and timing belt are also low miles.
Still has OEM exhaust with catalytic converter and passes emissions, but is now emissions except (would be perfect for someone looking to go turbo or do an engine swap).
Here are major issues (it's still a 25 year old car):
- Some dings and few hail marks in the paint (pictures are current though)
- Scratches on rear bumper
- Small oil leak; maybe a quart between oi changes
- No soft top (bolted-on hard top only)
- Airbag light comes on sometimes due to worn slip ring
- No A/C (I have all the parts, though) and it worked when removed)
- No cruise control (same story)
- Window motors are weak, but work
- No stereo (but wiring still in place)
- Loud on the highway (from hardtop and diff. ratios)
- Some of the interior is removed for weight (armrest, rear cargo shelf)
I also have a set of Enkei racing wheels and Hoosier slicks that I would include for the right price. Also a set of Hawk almost-new DTC60 racing brake pads.
Car is ready for the track, autocross, back roads, daily driver duty, whatever. Clean GA title in my name, and current tags. Still has valid inspection sticker from Atlanta Motorsports Park on the windshield. Again, lots of fun. It's been a great car, and I'd keep it if I had more time to use it, but sadly, I don't.
Email is best for me, but call or text is fine too. Leave me a voicemail if I don't pick up. Also interested in trades for a car trailer or possibly a good Subaru engine (maybe other car stuff/tools too, who knows). Willing to negotiate a little on price if you don't want some of the racing gear.
